Will I love The Emerald Mile?

The exceptional book about the very wet spring Glen Canyon Dam almost failed and was saved from being over-topped by a hastily constructed wall of (wait for it) plywood! And the men who decided there was no better time to set the speed record for running the Grand Canyon. I know! I know!

I read this book on a 2-week river trip down the Colorado, which made the read all the more gripping. The Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring even if you’re only gazing into its beguiling depths from a vista point—moreso if you’re accompanying seasoned river runner Kenton Grua in his attempt to smash a speed record riding a storm-swollen, raging Colorado in a wooden dory.

This is probably the best nonfiction "story" I've ever read. It kept me on the edge of suspense while constantly teaching me all sorts of amazing history about water, dams, and rivers in the West. Some of that history was truly eyebrow raising information that I could never have gained were it not for Fedarko's level of investment and research into this wild and wonderful story.

I love reading about a good outdoor adventure that is something I would never attempt in a place I would love to be, one that has me on the edge of my seat and gets my heart thumping, with real people I can relate to. This book has it all for me.

The Emerald Mile is one of my favorite books ever. Author Kevin Fedarko weaves the story of an illicit, record-setting paddle through the Grand Canyon with the history of this incredible, mind-blowing landscape. Fast-paced and compelling, the narrative moves quickly while remaining accessible and informative. I’ve yet to float through the Grand Canyon but reading (and re-reading) The Emerald Mile brings me as close to the real thing as I can get. When I finally got around to running the Colorado River rapids, it was in a wooden dory, with the legendary boatman Kenton Grua, “The Factor” as he was known, and the character at the center of this book. It is such an engrossing story because of knowing Grua and having been in his boat, “Emerald Mile,” that when I finished reading it, I turned immediately to page one and read the book all over again.

This book is as fast-paced as the whitewater rapids Fedarko writes about. Massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River in 1983 threatened the most catastrophic dam failure in U.S. history.
