Why read it?

3 authors picked The Camel Club as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

After reading all the original Lee Child books, I thought I would never admire another writer more. Even Clive Cussler, whose works were my initiation into the world of adult action fiction, had come in second place. Then, I picked up my first Baldacci. This is one of the best of his popular series, and this, the first in the series, deserves to be ranked as one of the top novels in the genre.

Baldacci spins tightly plotted yarns. Everything is realistic: the physical conflict, the romance, the psychology, and the technical details especially. His vocabulary and grammar are professional.…

Because I enjoy reading about government conspiracies, I love this book, which features a group that has been assembled to study conspiracies. When a murder is committed, it leads to their own conspiracy machinations with government involvement.

As usual in Baldacci’s writing, the characters are unique and engaging. In many books, there is one protagonist that drives the action, but in this book, it is this eclectic group that strives to find the truth.

The Camel Club took me away from the massive technical details that Clancy wrote to a more intimate spy character…and his cadre of retired spies. Whereas Clancy's writings were broader in scope, Baldacci narrowed the field and presented characterization at a closer level, one the reader can readily relate to. As I discovered David Baldacci's books, I fell in love with his style of writing. His novels have probably had the greatest influence on my writings above any other author.

From Chuck's list on spy thrillers.
