Why read it?

4 authors picked Mars as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I like this novel very much (I read it 3 times), and I think it is the best novel about Mars exploration I ever read. It mixes good scientific accuracy, with well-described and realistic characters, with adventure and mystery. It is as compelling as a thriller, and I found it very difficult to stop reading to go to sleep.

The main character at the beginning seems to be a loser, but as the story unfolds, he develops into a hero without losing his humanity. In the end, I read the sequel to meet him again and to understand some points…

From Giancarlo's list on human Mars exploration.

I love this book because I could easily imagine myself in its setting. It is set in the near future and is about ordinary people in extraordinary situations, successes and failures.

I felt this story to be most significant because it may well happen in my lifetime or yours. As the characters undertake their first exploration of Mars, I find myself traveling with them in my imagination. Being a Mars fanatic, I know enough about the planet to know how accurate the descriptive writing is, and I really felt I was there. Superbly written, this is a story of our…

After spending a few weeks on the Navajo lands in Northern Arizona in 1988, I wanted to write my book from the holistic and naturalistic perspective of a young Navajo who had worked for NASA and lived off the reservation for several years (loosely based on a friend of mine). As it turned out, Ben Bova got there ahead of me in 1992, sending a Navajo geologist on the first crewed mission to Mars. While he’s there, he makes a discovery that also ties into Navajo culture. I have always appreciated the worldview of the Navajo people, and characters with…

Mars was the first book about humans visiting Mars that felt believable to me. There is something inspiring and satisfying about a cast of characters forced to solve complex issues with real science and teamwork. By setting the novel in the "not too distant" future, Bova makes it feel lived in and relatable. And, the fact that it hints at an ancient alien mystery only serves to make it more exciting.

From Dylan's list on sci-fi to pique your sense of wonder.
