6 authors picked Margo's Got Money Troubles as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
Margot’s Got Money Troubles is a sharp, funny, and deeply human novel that explores the messy intersections of ambition, motherhood, and self-worth in the modern world. Thorpe brings her signature blend of wit and empathy to the story of Margo, a single mother who turns to OnlyFans to make ends meet, and in doing so, confronts society’s judgments about sex, success, and what it means to survive. The book is both laugh-out-loud hilarious and quietly devastating, filled with characters who feel heartbreakingly real. It’s a perfect recommendation for readers who appreciate stories that don’t flinch from the absurdity and tenderness…
Rufi Thorpe has managed to merge two different points of view to tell Margo’s story. Thorpe makes the changes organic from the beginning by showing the reason why Margo, a budding writer, tells her story this way. The transitions back and forth from limited third-person to first-person are seamless and create a relatable main character who reveals her life with humor and self-deprecation as she grows from an unsure teen into a caring and competent adult. Complex characters enliven the novel, especially Margo's father, a retired professional wrestler in a precarious state of drug recovery who is also supportive, a…
This book has heart but it also has an edgy, interesting story. It is bold but also kind and gentle.

While I feel like I've never read a book like this, I also feel like I can easily see what it could have been--and what it managed to steer clear of. I feel like the story of an unexpected, young pregnancy, money troubles, sex work, a troubled father has never been done more lovingly; plots with these ingredients too often going into a world I want no part of. A cold, bitter, nihilistic world of grief and pain. But this book reminds you that people who are struggling are PEOPLE. With friendships, and jokes, and wants, and desires. Everyone is…
This is a wild ride of a book, kept on the rails only by the author's splendidly steady hand with tone (it never goes too dark) and pacing and by the indomitable Margo herself. It recalls Elinor Lippman at her best, but is also absolutely its own story--zany and unpredictable, for sure (aliens on OnlyFans!) but grounded throughout in our main character's faith in herself and love for her child.
The characters in this book were incredibly flawed, which is to say they felt incredibly real. This book was human and current and it made me think about the choices we make to build our lives.
