Feminism is a complex subject. It has birthed many breakthroughs in a world that was, until recently, mostly patriarchal. It has saved lives and given brilliant minds the basic rights they were always entitled to.

But like religion and politics, feminism is also being weaponized, abused, and twisted to serve questionable agendas. Mikki Kendall explores this darker side and reveals how racism and oppression still lurk in the shadows, leaving many women of color on the sidelines in a fight often led by mainstream (privileged) feminists.

Mikki Kendall’s account of what Black women and girls are up against in America left me angry and devastated. Her description of how Black girls are sexualized at shockingly young ages and how portraying them this way enables sexual abuse absolutely gutted me.

For me, this book was a powerful reminder of why no woman is safe in a culture that says you have to be viewed as respectable in order to be worthy of protection from violence.

Mikki Kendall's book deeply resonates with me. I'm personally moved by its call to action and its push for the recognition of unseen disparities within the feminist movement. I appreciate how it illuminates intersectionality and demands inclusivity, both of which I hold crucial in feminism.

As much as I like to poke fun to express the angst of fighting for equal rights with men, we can’t overlook the fact that so many women aren’t equal to other women. The title of this book refers to the fight for women of color to get basic necessities of access to food and shelter.
