Book cover of Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies

Book description

D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit, aimed at convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong invasion…

Why read it?

5 authors picked Double Cross as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Gave intimate and lively insight into British spy efforts leading up to D-Day. Individuals and their personalities are engrossing. Added a lot to my knowledge of D-Day and who made it successful to Great Britain.

An absolutely fascinating account of the incredible subterfuge employed by the allies before the D-day landings and carried out by an extraordinarily diverse team of misfits, self-servers, and courageous self-sacrificers.

The spy network and double cross methodology employed against the Nazis has to rank as one of the greatest collective deceptions of all time. By turns fascinating, thought provoking, and extremely moving, this is a great read – as the blurb says it races along in a tumbling narrative reminiscent of the best thrillers.

Not to be missed.

I have always been fascinated with WWII war stories, especially those involving intelligence operations.

Double Cross is one of the most unbelievable stories I've ever read. It's a nonfiction book that's so incredible it almost sounds like fiction. The British scored success after success against all the German intelligence services to keep the Germans guessing about dozens of Allied military activities, including the actual site of the D-Day landings.

MI6 might get all the cool James Bond movies made about it, but MI5 was the real star of this book.

If you want to read about one of the most amazing operations of World War II, then this is the book for you. It is the story of the Allied double agents (five in particular) who successfully tricked Hitler into thinking the invasion of France would occur in a different location than planned. In my opinion, this book is enjoyable to read because of the five agents and their backgrounds, personalities, and how they went about tricking the Germans. One of the agents was used by Ian Fleming as a model for the James Bond character. Another agent was the…

I could have picked any of Ben Macintyre’s books. He writes history as yarn, which is what I tried to do in Agent Jack. That definitely doesn’t mean making things up, but it means trying to tell the tale in a way that will keep the reader on board. British intelligence’s Double Cross operation – playing German spies back against their masters – was huge, but Macintyre keeps it at a manageable size by focusing on a few key agents. There’s a real skill too, in writing a book where everyone knows the ending but that still keeps the reader…

From Robert's list on secret wartime histories around WW2.
