Will I love Confessions of a Shopaholic?

The irony surrounding Becky Bloomwood (aka ‘The Shopaholic’) makes me smile. She’s a financial journalist who is constantly in a pickle with money. Her financial worries cause her stress, and the best way to deal with them is to go shopping, which continues the debt spiral. 

Becky is flawed but lovable, and I can relate to her predicament. How many of us try to justify our small actions that we know deep down are wrong? I loved the plucky, flawed, and funny protagonist, Becky Bloomwood. She had an engaging voice and got herself into hilarious situations. This was one of the rare books that made me laugh out loud and it was what sparked my interest in writing a humorous chick-lit novel of my own. I also enjoyed the other books in the series, which follow Becky as she becomes a wife and eventually a mother. The series was a great example of an author creating character arcs for both the protagonist and supporting characters that evolve throughout different stages of their lives. 

Kinsella is considered by many to be the queen of “chick lit,” and it all started with this first book in her massively successful series about the lovable, debt-ridden shopaholic, Rebecca Bloomwood. But while Becky is running around London trying to find creative and frankly, quite funny, ways to keep shopping and avoid paying off her debt, it’s her friendship with Suze that makes the book relatable.
