Why read it?

7 authors picked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I have probably read this book five times as a kid and three more times as an adult, and every time, I take away another life lesson.

As a kid, you are caught up in the story of Charlie going through the whimsical world of Willy Wonka, with its magical wonders of candy making.

But as an adult you see the other story—the story of Charlie, the underdog who grows up in a home impoverished financially but not emotionally or morally. He succeeds in winning it all in the end due to his respectfully showing self-restraint and honoring his high…

What I loved about this book is that it pulled me into a vast imaginative world complete with fantasy fulfillment. Who wouldn’t want to win a golden ticket and get a chocolate tour? As a kid, I enjoyed the amazing descriptions of the wondrous factory and appreciated the vivid descriptions, like Violet turning into a giant blueberry.

The book also helped me gain a sense of justice, knowing that deserving Charlie could climb out of poverty and that bad behavior has negative consequences.

From Jennifer's list on books that combine food and magic.

A certified chocoholic classic. In this whimsical book, Charlie Bucket finds a Golden Ticket that grants him entrance into Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory.

Inside, he’s introduced to a strange new world, full of both mischief and magic. Featuring everything from chocolate waterfalls to Everlasting Gobstoppers, this book will quickly make you want to take a trip to the candy store.

I personally recommend this story because it is a fun read that teaches the reader personal values and inner strength that leaves the reader feeling positive about themselves.

This is my favorite young adult book and it inspired me to write my book because I find the characters in the story quirky and they have flaws. The protagonist is able to defy all odds and win in the end. I found the story pretty inspirational that leaves me feeling positive.

From Kathryn's list on exploring the imagination.

If there is any book that is the epitome of fantasy. A world where things that couldn’t normally happen come to life. A story that captures the minds of everyone who reads it. An idea so out there, but so attached to our basic psyche that it speaks to our dreams. That book would be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Oddly enough out of all the books on this list it would easily be considered the most kid-oriented, but it also is probably the most fire and brimstone of them all. It is all tongue and cheek to the…

Charlie Bucket’s life is grim. "There wasn’t even enough money to buy proper food at all. The only meals they could afford were bread and margarine for breakfast, boiled potatoes and cabbage for lunch and cabbage soup for supper." But all that’s about to change. Once he’s been introduced to everlasting gobstoppers, a river of chocolate, three-course-dinner chewing gum, and lickable wallpaper, there’s no going back. Not to mention the whipple scrumptious fudgemallow delight.

This classic was written by one of the most creative minds in children’s literature. Roald Dahl’s books have engaged children all over the world for over 70 years. The world of Willy Wonka is probably one of the best-known and treasured children’s books about chocolate today. It is a story that is rich in humor, filled with unbelievably creative ideas, and conveys a subtle underlying message.

From Marc's list on chocolate.
