Why read it?

3 authors picked Akira, Volume 1 as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Akira is a must-read manga masterpiece, a deep analysis of government corruption, political upheaval, criminality, and decay of society. Apart from the breathtaking art, what caught my attention was the complex story and the nihilistic, harsh, and hopeless world Akira shows. There are virtually no good characters in this story and it fits the apocalyptic, decadent reality they face and live. Expect a lot of psychic abilities and motorcycles, along with gritty, graphic violence.

Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira is a sci-fi masterpiece. Visit Neo-Tokyo again and again… then watch the most beautiful Anime ever made, based on the manga. The manga is a breeze to read with art that will have you staring and looking for insane detail. It explores dystopian imagination with a wild and cool cast of characters. Its unfathomable style and design with the attention to detail in the art will make you marvel at how Katsuhiro Otomo was able to deliver such a feat.

I suggest that you read this one on a Sunday night.

The ultimate classic! If you haven’t read Akira, stop reading this and order these books… I’ll wait…

Another dose of a grim post-apocalyptic future, Akira is a delight to behold. Things get weird in Neo Tokyo when a group of rough-and-tumble teens encounter a boy with what seems to be… contagious telekinesis?

I love how this series centers on a “friendly” rivalry that just grows and grows as this mysterious power grows and grows until it threatens to swallow the entire city. Left unchecked, surely it would swallow the world.

I’ve never read a story that felt so big…

From Andrew's list on graphic novels for a big imagination.
