Why read it?

4 authors picked A Curious Beginning as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

From the first page, I was obsessed with Veronica Speedwell. She’s sharp and fearless and refuses to let Victorian society define her. I love a heroine who takes control of her own fate, and Veronica does so with wit and intelligence.

This book pulled me in so completely that I stayed up way too late reading, completely enthralled by the chemistry between Veronica and Stoker, the twists in the mystery, and the world Raybourn creates. It reminded me why I love historical mysteries—smart, complex women pushing against the limits of their time.

This was my introduction to Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell series. I immediately grabbed the rest and loved every one of them. Interesting characters, historical mysteries with a slow burn romance. What's not to like?

This book is as much about her smoldering relationship with the enigmatic Stoker as it is a whodunnit, which is part of what attracted me to it. Flashes of Insight by Lynda Allen,

Mood swings and insomnia are one thing, hot flash-induced psychic visions are quite another. In my opinion, this is a wonderful example of the Lady Detective genre. I found the chemistry between the main character, and her male partner, to be both charming and engaging. Moreover, the world building was excellent, and the author does a great job of presenting the mystery itself while leaving me wanting more once it was solved. It was from books like this, and the classic TV show, The Avengers, that my own series had its genesis.
