Why am I passionate about this?

Growing up very pale in a sun-washed Australian coastal town, I often found myself retreating to the cool shadows. It was in the darkness that I felt most at home—which may be why I’ve always been drawn to stories with a darker edge. My fascination with creatures in those frightening tales—immortal, dark, and possessed of terrible appetitesled to Winter’s Shadow, my debut YA novel, and the reason I still write today. I love books that blur the line between horror and the mundane—tales that feel like nightmares recalled in the comforting light of day. These are the stories that linger, and this list is a love letter to them.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of 'Salem's Lot

M.J. Hearle Why I love this book

I discovered Stephen King when I was eight (I was a precocious reader), sneaking The Shining off my parents’ bookshelf. That book scared me, but it was King’s story of vampires descending on a small Midwestern town that truly kept me up at night and taught me the power of horror fiction.

In recent years, especially in the YA genre, vampires became a little overexposed, so I find it instructive to return to Salem’s Lot periodically to remind myself just how terrifying the monster can be in the hands of a gifted storyteller.

By Stephen King ,

Why should I read it?

17 authors picked 'Salem's Lot as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

#1 BESTSELLER • Ben Mears has returned to Jerusalem’s Lot in hopes that exploring the history of the Marsten House, an old mansion long the subject of rumor and speculation, will help him cast out his personal devils and provide inspiration for his new book.

But when two young boys venture into the woods, and only one returns alive, Mears begins to realize that something sinister is at work.

In fact, his hometown is under siege from forces of darkness far beyond his imagination. And only he, with a small group of allies, can hope to contain the evil that…

Book cover of Let the Right One in

M.J. Hearle Why I love this book

I caught the original Swedish film before reading the book, and was delighted by how the novel enriched and expanded upon the film’s themes.

I was a lonely kid and could empathise with the protagonist’s desperation to connect. Had a vampire shown up in my early teens and extended the hand of friendship, I probably would have taken it.

Supernatural tropes are often a powerful way to explore themes of alienation, longing, and teenage angst, and few stories do it better than Let the Right One In.

By John Ajvide Lindqvist , Ebba Segerberg (translator) ,

Why should I read it?

8 authors picked Let the Right One in as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s international bestseller Let the Right One In is “a brilliant take on the vampire myth, and a roaring good story” (New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong), the basis for the multi-film festival award-winning Swedish film, the U.S. adaptation Let Me In directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), and the Showtime TV series.

It is autumn 1981 when inconceivable horror comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenager is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at…

M.J. Hearle Why I love this book

While Martin is understandably best known for his brilliant A Song of Ice and Fire series (or Game of Thrones, as it’s more colloquially known), this lesser-known gem is a testament to his versatility as a storyteller.

Not only did he craft one of the greatest fantasy sagas of all time, but he also wrote one of the most original vampire novels I’ve ever read. I love how unconventional Fevre Dream is—particularly the vivid historical details about riverboating along the great American rivers in the 1800s. But it’s the unexpected friendship at the heart of the story that gives it real power.

I’m a sucker for stories where human characters form bonds with supernatural entities, and the relationship in Fevre Dream is one of the most affecting I’ve ever read.

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked Fevre Dream as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 16, and 17.

What is this book about?

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern—no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Marsh meant to…

Book cover of NOS4A2

M.J. Hearle Why I love this book

Given his lineage (his dad is Stephen King), it’s no surprise Joe Hill cooked up such a banger of a horror novel.

While Charlie Manx isn’t a traditional bloodsucker, his particular strain of vampirism is so eerie and unique he might be even more disturbing than any monster in ’Salem’s Lot.

Beyond Manx, the paranormal world Hill builds around our own is so richly imagined I find myself hoping he’ll return to it. That liminal space between reality and darker realms is one I’ve tried to chart in my own work.

By Joe Hill ,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked NOS4A2 as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Summer. Massachusetts.

An old Silver Wraith with a frightening history. A story about one serial killer and his lingering, unfinished business.

Anyone could be next.

We're going to Christmasland ...

NOS4R2 is an old-fashioned horror novel in the best sense. Claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying, this is a story that will have you on the edge of the seat while you read, and leaving the lights on while you sleep. With the horrific tale of Charles Manx and his Silver Wraith, Joe Hill has established himself as the premiere horror and supernatural thriller writer of his generation.

Book cover of Interview with the Vampire

M.J. Hearle Why I love this book

When I first read Interview with the Vampire (I was 12), I was struck by how Anne Rice made darkness beautiful. The mood, the grief, the sensuality—it all felt so rich and strange and alive.

I didn’t just want to read about Louis and Lestat; I wanted to live inside that shadowed world, however painful. The power of her vampires was alluring, even as their sadness confused me. How could being immortal be such a torment?

This book taught me that supernatural fiction could be poetic, philosophical, even transcendent. There’s a reason this novel endures.

It made me want to write stories where beauty and horror dance together in candlelight.
