Why am I passionate about this?

If one of the main reasons we marry is to raise a family, what happens to the couple once the children grow up and no longer need daily care?

A few years ago, I completed an MSc in Psychology, and my dissertation explored exactly this question. After interviewing many couples, it became clear that unless parents are emotionally prepared for life after children, the sense of loss can be overwhelming. That research raised deeper questions about why we commit—and what keeps us committed.

Ruby Soames Why I love this book

Reading this book made me blush, gasp and giggle—a lot!

Difficult to describe without spoilers—a literal and metaphorical road trip with surprises at every stop. The moving, shocking and very funny story follows 45-year-old Los Angeles–based multimedia artist, navigating midlife, parenting and a marriage that had lost its narrative under the weight of routine and thwarted expectations.

Ruby Soames Why I love this book

The story follows Jack and Elizabeth who meet when they are young, struggling artists in Chicago and moves into their midlife years where their marriage strains amid parenting, the wellness culture, polyamory, and a yearning for their ‘best lives’.

What I found most intriguing first was the great writing, but also the contrast between pre-digital life and the way our immediate environment shapes our self-perception, and in that, the ways we relate to each other.

By Nathan Hill ,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked Wellness as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

'American storytelling at its era-spanning best . . . An immersive, multi-layered portrait of a marriage, Nathan Hill's follow-up to The Nix is a work of quiet genius.' - The Observer

'The incredible scope of this dazzlingly detailed state-of-the-nation satire almost defies description . . . Brilliant doesn't begin to describe it, but I'll say it anyway.' - Daily Mail

'I doubt I'll enjoy many books this year as much as Wellness.' - The Times

An Oprah's Book Club Pick.

Ruby Soames Why I love this book

This starts with such a great premise: Douglas Petersen, a devoted but socially awkward biochemist, is blindsided when his wife announces she might leave him, but first, they’ll go on a "Grand Tour of Europe" with their 17-year-old son.

Douglas hopes this is his chance to fix the marriage, connect with his son, and rediscover the man he was supposed to be. But as the trip goes on, we start to realise that so often our vision of how life should be is based on fear of change and habit.

Book cover of Fleishman Is in Trouble

Ruby Soames Why I love this book

From the first page I was caught up in the whirlwind of Toby’s post-marriage Manhattan—dating apps, sexting and catching up on years of fidelity—which all seems to be going very well until his ex-wife vanishes.

Then Toby Fleishman has to start getting to know Rachel Fleishman all over again, and in that search, himself.

The quirky narrative shifts from biting to moving to philosophical. Sharply observed and wildly entertaining.

What is my book about?

When Elizabeth tracks down her first love during the Covid pandemic, their messages rapidly escalate into an erotic obsession—until she turns up in Jack’s town ready to make it real…

The ideas I wanted to explore were the stories we tell ourselves about our pasts, shown by Elizabeth’s obsession with winning over the handsome 18-year-old Jack who’d ditched her when she was a teenager. Also, the disconnect between virtual passion and every-day reality. This is especially put into relief when Jack’s wife discovers his cheating and sets out to make their lives hell. Finally, it was important to me to show all facets of a divorce: though Jude is devastated by Jack’s deceit, what right have we to hold another human back from happiness?
