Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve written across genres, including mysteries like The Last Policeman and big works of alternate history like Underground Airlines. But Bedbugs—now republished as The Bonus Room—was one of my first books, and very dear to my heart. I’ve always loved books that pit a single, relatively helpless protagonist against some inexplicable force that he or she cannot begin to fathom. A force that can’t be reasoned with or bargained with. You just have to beat it. Perhaps that’s why I love these books about man vs. beast—the natural world is our friend, and animal are subservient to us…until suddenly, terrifyingly, they’re not.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Cujo

Ben H. Winters Why I love this book

It probably goes without saying that King is the master of horror. So often what he does so well is conjuring supernatural baddies (The Mist, Salem’s Lot, Pet Sematary, The Stand, etc., etc., etc.) or showing the consequences of ungodly powers (Firestarter, Dead Zone, Carrie, etc., etc., etc.).

Cujo stands out for taking an absolute valid, absolutely realistic fear—because yes, in real life, in certain situations, dogs are scary as hell—and pushing it to the absolute limit.

By Stephen King ,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked Cujo as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

Book cover of Moby-Dick

Ben H. Winters Why I love this book

Moby-Dick is one of those dusty old classics that we feel like we’re supposed to read that when you actually read it turns out to be genuinely goddamn fun.

The book is about—well, it’s about so many goddamn things, including melancholy, the American dream, and the history of whaling—but also it’s about the relationship between one dude and one whale, and the dude is obsessed with the whale and thinks the whale is his enemy, but the whale….well, the whale is a whale.

Is the whale really Ahab’s enemy, or is he more like Don Draper in that classic scene from where he goes, “I don’t think about you at all?” Brutal.

By Herman Melville ,

Why should I read it?

30 authors picked Moby-Dick as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Melville's tale of the whaling industry, and one captain's obsession with revenge against the Great White Whale that took his leg. Classics Illustrated tells this wonderful tale in colourful comic strip form, offering an excellent introduction for younger readers. Book cover of Jaws

Ben H. Winters Why I love this book

Jaws is one of those extremely rare cases where the movie is actually better. (Can’t think of another one? Try The Godfather.)
It’s a perfectly fun suspense novel, but in the film version Spielberg conjures up by special effects magic (and the magic of Dreyfuss and Scheider’s performances) what Benchley in his novel comes close to but never quite lands: the absolutely terrifying feelings of knowing something is there—and getting closer—and closer—but you can’t actually see

By Peter Benchley ,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked Jaws as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Peter Benchley's Jaws first appeared in 1974. As well as Steven Spielberg's film adaptation, the novel has sold over twenty million copies around the world, creating a legend that refuses to die.

It's never safe to go back in the water . . .

It was just another day in the life of a small Atlantic resort until the terror from the deep came to prey on unwary holiday makers. The first sign of trouble - a warning of what was to come - took the form of a young woman's body, or what was left of it, washed up…

Book cover of Animal Farm

Ben H. Winters Why I love this book

When we think of scary animals we think of gnashing teeth and tearing claws, but obviously Orwell’s famous parable presents a very different kind of malevolence: that of overweaning ambition and our deep-seated instinct to control.

The pigs that present themselves as heroes and then slowly, greedily, inexorable turn into murderous dictators, forcing the other animals to do their bidding and then slaughtering them when they become too old, are of course not really pig-like at all—they are human-like, and therefore all the more terrifying.

By George Orwell ,

Why should I read it?

19 authors picked Animal Farm as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others.'

Mr Jones of Manor Farm is so lazy and drunken that one day he forgets to feed his livestock. The ensuing rebellion under the leadership of the pigs Napoleon and Snowball leads to the animals taking over the farm. Vowing to eliminate the terrible inequities of the farmyard, the renamed Animal Farm is organised to benefit all who walk on four legs. But as time passes,…

Book cover of The Island of Doctor Moreau

Ben H. Winters Why I love this book

Wells is one of the great early masters of science fiction, creator of The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, but with Moreau he was also one of the masters of what David Cronenberg fans know as body horror—the gross, startling, and menacing intermingling of the human body with exterior elements.

In this case, pumas, pigs, you name it. With characters like Ape-Man and Sloth-Man, there is a definitely campiness here, but never enough to distract from the fact that it’s deeply, resonantly disturbing.
