Book cover of Abigail Trench

Susie Black ❤️ loved this book because...

Leave it to clever Randy Overbeck to turn a historical event into a character with a personality of its own. Overbeck has written a cleverly plotted allegory of good versus evil. The author wove a timely tale that unflinchingly spotlights the incredible cruelty of the British Army, the hardships colonial families faced, and the gut-wrenching, sometimes life-and-death decisions they were forced to make to give their children a chance at a better life.
The author’s descriptions paint a vivid picture of the conflict between the Colonists and Loyalists so detailed that readers can hear the cries of the dying colonial inmates on a prisoner ship, smell the acrid odor of death permeating the ship’s bowels, and feel the deadly snap of the rope tightening around his neck as a colonist is hanged by the British Army.
The story moves with the whiplash of an emotional rollercoaster ride through an intricate plot. The cast of flawed but believable characters drives a complicated story that grabs readers by the throat and never lets go, while rooting for the protagonists to the last page. Overbeck cranks up the conflict with a backstory that keeps readers turning pages to see how it turns out.
The story deftly weaves a taut plot driven by love, loss, trust, family ties, and the inner strength one must summon to face adversity head-on rather than look away. Part romance, part historical saga, part redemption with a second chance at life and love, Abigail Trench will capture the imagination of readers who enjoy a love story fueled by a mixture of courage and conflict, and appreciate that when one door closes, another one opens, but only if you dare to step across the threshold.

What is this book about?

A vivid, propulsive Revolutionary-era thriller with the spy-craft verve of the streaming hit TURN: Washington’s Spies and the electricity of 1776’s New York that Hamilton lovers will recognize, this story is inspired by the lone female operative in Washington’s spy ring.In occupied New York, a schoolteacher with everything to lose turns information into a weapon, threading between Redcoats and rebels as plots against Washington gather steam. Book cover of Blue Dog

Susie Black ❤️ loved this book because...

The author paints a vivid picture of the bayous that is so detailed in their descriptions that readers will break out in a sweat from the humidity, be repelled by the creepy, terrifying denizens, see the droopy live oaks draped over the marshy water, smell the rich, earthy aroma of the Spanish Moss and Cypress infused with the scent of damp soil and decay, and keep time to the loud chorus of cicadas at dusk. Bartell’s detailed descriptions of Southern Louisiana’s social mores, political atmosphere, architecture, history, weather, and geography add to the story’s authenticity.

The story unfolds carefully. The tension ratchets up with each page. Then, the intricate plot ramps up to a heart-pounding pace, with a whiplash rollercoaster ride of emotions in the aftermath of a deadly hurricane.

Part romance, part thriller, part mystery, part paranormal fantasy, part redemption with a second chance at life and love, Blue Dog will capture the imagination of readers who enjoy a love story fueled by a mix of fantasy and reality and believe that things are not always what they appear to be. If you didn’t believe in Rougarou, hexes, spells, and voodoo before, you’ll question your beliefs at the end of this heart-pounding tale.

Book cover of Pieces of Blue

Susie Black ❤️ loved this book because...

Liz Flaherty casts an inherited lake house as a main character that takes on a life of its own, which becomes the protagonist’s implausible anchor and life-saver. Flaherty has penned an emotional tale that deftly weaves ribbons of angst and romance into a well-written plot driven by betrayal, love, loss, trust, family ties, and the inner strength one must summon to face adversity created by both human fallibility and fate. Part romance, part coming of age later in life,  part redemption with a second chance at life and love, Pieces of Blue will pull at the heartstrings and capture the imagination of readers who enjoy a love story fueled by the never-ending battle between decisions made by choice or fate and believe that one should never stop asking what if.
