Book cover of Venetia

Rebecca Hazell ❤️ loved this book because...

This is an oldie but goodie. I’m rereading all the Georgette Heyer novels in my library, and I started with this one. Charming, alternately funny and sad, full of memorable characters, and it is utterly accurate historically, including the slang. Heyer’s work was required reading for anthropology students in some universities. Lucky kids!

What is this book about?

Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen."—Publishers Weekly

Beautiful, capable, and independent minded, Venetia Lanyon's life on her family's estate in the country side is somewhat restricted. But her neighbor, the infamous Lord Damerel, a charming rake shunned by polite society, is about to shake things up.

Lord Damerel has built his life on his dangerous reputation, and when he meets Venetia, he has nothing to offer and everything to regret. Though his scandalous past and deepest secrets give Venetia reason to mistrust him, a rogue always gets what he wants.

As Venetia's well-meaning family…

Book cover of The Foundling

Rebecca Hazell ❤️ loved this book because...

Another Heyer classic. What I appreciate about this one is that it is not a romance, though Heyer is credited as the originator of the Regency romance genre. The other thing I like about her books, especially this one, is that a man is the main character. The hero runs away from his stifling guardian and falls into and rescues himself from a series of scrapes, including being kidnapped. So charmingly written, and with a wry wit. Heyer was very funny in her unique way.

A Civil Contract

Rebecca Hazell ❤️ loved this book because...

Heyer immerses you in a different world in each book, and with some exceptions, never writes about the same slice of society in the same way. But she brings to life the 19th century upper class mind. In this story, a young nobleman inherits his father’s gambling debts, has to retire from his role in the Napoleonic wars, and has to marry for money to save the family from ruin. Turns out, the so-called lower orders of British society may have a lot going for them.
