My favorite read in 2026

Book cover of Bandit Country

Jonathan Trigg ❀️ loved this book because...

I first read Bandit Country years ago, but Toby has recently updated it for this new, enhanced edition, and once again when I re-read it I was reminded of just how good it is. For me this is the best book on the Troubles there is. His revisions mainly concern individuals he is now able to name given they have passed away in the meantime, and that is hugely valuable as well as being enthralling.

What is this book about?

To the army, South Armagh is 'Bandit Country', 200 square miles of the most dangerous and hostile terrain in Northern Ireland which has claimed the lives of 115 soldiers since 1969. To republicans, it is 'God's Country', the only area in the six counties where the occupiers have successfully been resisted. Toby Harnden has interviewed members of

the army, MI5 and the RUC as well as members of the IRA and prominent republican families to form a detailed and picture of the delicate balance of tensions in the area and explores how geographically and politically important South Armagh is to…

My 2nd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of 1942

Jonathan Trigg ❀️ loved this book because...

I'm a big fan of Richard's work, his book 'The Germans in Normandy' is still one of the best books on D-Day and the subsequent Normandy campaign I've ever read. With '1942' he has been very ambitious, taking on the subject of covering the German/Nazi view of the war in what he proposes was it's most pivotal year. I might disagree with him on that but there's no denying he puts up a very strong case.

What is this book about?

"[A] well-written and carefully researched account that illuminates all sides of these grinding battles." The Wall Street Journal

A unique history of the Axis powers attempt to win the Second World War in 1942, told through the eyes of those who were there.

Drawing upon sources in German, Russian, Italian, Hungarian, Romanian and English, 1942: Hitler's Gamble describes the spring and summer campaigns in the Soviet Union and Africa which crowned the Axis forces with fresh laurels. Impressive victories were won at Kharkov, Sevastopol and Tobruk. Axis powers were then on the cusp of victory in Egypt, the Caucasus and…

My 3rd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of Tunisgrad

Jonathan Trigg πŸ‘ liked this book because...

Interesting one this. Generally I like Saul David's writing and 'Tunisgrad' is an interesting take on a part of the Second World War I'm not hugely familiar with, and while David has done his usual excellent research job for me he focuses too much on the 'generals', the buys at the top and what they did, rather than look in any great detail at the soldiers on the frontline who actually did all the fighting. But that's just my view and what I do in my own work, so it's a personal opinion and I get that.

Donβ€˜t forget about my book πŸ˜€

The Battle of the Somme Through German Eyes

By Jonathan Trigg ,

Book cover of The Battle of the Somme Through German Eyes

What is my book about?

Everyone knows what happened on the Somme in the summer of 1916; the flower of a British generation going over the top only to be mown down in droves in a few minutes - lions led by donkeys. But if this is true why did a senior German officer at the time describe the Somme as 'the muddy graveyard of the German Army'? Surely the Germans won, didn't they? This is the story of the Somme from the other side, from the German trenches, told by the men who fought it. This is the untold story of one the First World War's defining battles.
