Book cover of Winterlong

Ian Coates ❤️ loved this book because...

The mega fast-paced thriller is crammed with tension and exciting action as Carter Blake tries to stay one step ahead of the assassins his ex-employer has sent against him. The characters are believable and I quickly came to like them, which cranked up the tension as Blake tries to stay alive long enough to find a way to ensure his long-term safety. I found this book extremely hard to put down before it was finished.

It's been five years since Carter Blake parted ways with top-secret government operation Winterlong. They brokered a deal at the time: he'd keep quiet about what they were doing, and in return he'd be left alone.

But news that one of Blake's old allies, a man who agreed the same deal, is dead means only one thing - something has changed and Winterlong is coming for him.

Emma Faraday, newly appointed head of the secret unit, is…

My 2nd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of Nowhere to Hide

Ian Coates ❤️ loved this book because...

Phew! This thriller's non-stop action and palpable tension makes it virtually impossible to put down. The story's realistic throughout and the characters come to life on the page. In particular, one of them -- Sarah Bennett -- who is on the run after the police protection she was under is compromised, is so well portrayed that I found myself holding my breath as she tries to stay alive. If breathtakingly tense action from start to finish is what you like, then this thriller is certainly for you. Max Luther shows he is a master of the genre.

My 3rd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of Ultimatum

Ian Coates ❤️ loved this book because...

The fast pace of this thriller is fuelled, not only by the speed with which the plot unfolds and its high level of action, but also by its extremely short chapters. The way it keeps the adrenaline pumping all the way through made it almost impossible to put down before the end. The book's exciting conclusion is tense, surprising, somewhat shocking, and very well written. Overall, this is certainly one of the best thrillers I've read for quite some time.

2 authors picked Ultimatum as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Authentic, unnervingly current and action-packed, Ultimatum is the explosive new thriller from BBC security correspondent and No.1 bestseller Frank Gardner.
Deep within a cave system at a military complex south-east of Tehran, hidden from the prying eyes of Western satellites, scientists are working round-the-clock on a banned device. Acting on the orders of a renegade cell within the ultra-conservative Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, their intention is to propel Iran into the elite club of nuclear-armed nations - and seal its domination of the Middle East.

Backlash

By Ian Coates ,

Book cover of Backlash

What is my book about?

Reviewers are describing Backlash as fast-paced, very hard to put down, and with an unusual and interesting twisty plotline.

One mistake was all it took and now you’re being blackmailed. But it’s not your money they want. Instead, you’re coerced into passing the blackmailer’s demands to his more dangerous victims – those who might retaliate. And when an arms dealer decides he won’t pay, it’s you he comes after.

It throws young interior designer Trish McGowan’s life and career into chaos. After narrowly surviving a bomb blast that destroys her shop, she finds herself running for her life. She quickly realises tracking down the blackmailer, the mysterious Argus, and trying to get his help is the only way she’ll manage to stay alive. But an experienced criminal who wants to remain anonymous isn’t easy to find. And he might be hiding in plain sight right in front of her.

As the arms dealer’s noose closes round McGowan, she uncovers two more of Argus’ victims, and they form an uneasy alliance to stop the blackmail once and for all.
