Book cover of Summer of '49

Gerald Elias ❤️ loved this book because...

I've been a Yankees fan (and Red Sox hater) since growing up on Long Island in the 1950s. So this book left me entirely satisfied in that regard. In addition, the book immerses us in a postwar world that is not so very far back in our past, yet seems to have been all but forgotten.

What is this book about?

This #1 bestselling baseball classic of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is “dazzling . . . heart-stopping . . . A celebration of a vanished heroic age” (The New York Times Book Review).
The summer of 1949: It was baseball’s Golden Age and the year Joe DiMaggio’s New York Yankees were locked in a soon-to-be classic battle with Ted Williams’s Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant. As postwar America looked for a unifying moment, the greatest players in baseball history brought their rivalry to the field, captivating the American public through the heart-pounding final moments of the season. Book cover of Crime of Privilege

Gerald Elias ❤️ loved this book because...

Though the book may be a thinly disguised exposé of the Kennedy clan, it stands on its own as a probing commentary on the privileged/political caste in our country, seemingly immune to prosecution for crimes committed, including rape. The book is also a compelling thriller as the toiling young lawyer, George Becket confronts overwhelming power and pressure to find justice.

What is this book about?

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE SACRAMENTO BEE

In the tradition of Scott Turow, William Landay, and Nelson DeMille, Crime of Privilege is a stunning thriller about power, corruption, and the law in America—and the dangerous ways they come together.

A murder on Cape Cod. A rape in Palm Beach.

All they have in common is the presence of one of America’s most beloved and influential families. But nobody is asking questions. Not the police. Not the prosecutors. And certainly not George Becket, a young lawyer toiling away in the basement of the…

Murder on Vacation

By Gerald Elias ,

Book cover of Murder on Vacation

What is my book about?

Sun, sand…and suspicious circumstances.

Retirement was supposed to be easy for former NYPD Chief Maury Gross—good food, baseball, and maybe a little peace and quiet. But thanks to his spirited wife Bobbi and her taste for “vacations to die for,” relaxation is the one thing that never makes the itinerary.

In this collection of short crime stories, Maury and Bobbi crisscross the country in search of scenic views, fine dining, and a well-earned break from the past. Instead, they keep stumbling into trouble—dead bodies, shady characters, and mysteries that refuse to stay buried. Fortunately, Maury hasn’t lost his touch. With a sharp mind, a dry wit, and a healthy appreciation for a good sandwich, he tackles each case with the instincts of a seasoned detective and the bemused patience of a husband along for the ride.

From seaside inns to mountain retreats, from wine country to small-town hideaways, no destination is safe from mischief—or from Maury’s uncanny ability to spot what others miss. Along the way, the banter between Maury and Bobbi sparkles with humor and heart, turning every investigation into an adventure as entertaining as it is suspenseful.

Packed with clever twists, memorable characters, and a generous helping of laugh-out-loud moments, Murder on Vacation is the perfect read for mystery lovers who like their crime served with a side of charm.
