I had a feeling I would enjoy it, it's been waiting on my TBR for ages, then I picked up a paperback of it at a tag sale so I jumped it up and OH MAN.
The voice was fantastic, Cady and her split sentences, too many feelings, and perfectly imperfect recollection of reality.
Gat, Johnny, Mirren, and the littles all roving the idyllic island until things are... less idyllic. The aunties, the King. I don't think there was anything about this book that I disliked. Suspenseful, twisty, heartbreaking (even once you knew what was to come, that didn't make reading it any less emotional). All the things.
I'm not an ending guesser, but I had an inkling a few chapters before part 4 but that only tightened the choke hold this book had on me.
The TikTok phenomenon and #1 New York Times bestseller.
A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island. A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy. A group of four friends-the Liars-whose friendship turns destructive. A revolution. An accident. A secret. Lies upon lies. True love. The truth.
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and Printz Award honouree E. Lockhart.
Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
Don't miss FAMILY OF LIARS, the thrilling prequel to We Were Liars, published in May 2022.
While this one felt more firmly in the dark fantasy realm than horror (even the gothic slowburn of the rest of this series) it was a really fun read.
I love Easton and their brand of story-telling. Their take on an adventure to America is perfect, though maybe Guam would have been nicer ;)
The sequences of traversing the cave were perfectly claustrophobia inducing (even if Easton is NOT claustrophobic in the slightest) and I loved the strange biology behind Fragment and his wholeness.
Maybe not really horror, but totally a 5 star read.
The next novella in the New York Times bestselling Sworn Soldier series, featuring Alex Easton investigating the dark, mysterious depths of a coal mine in America, from Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author T. Kingfisher. Perfect for fans of Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Stephen Graham Jones.
Alex Easton does not want to visit America.
They particularly do not want to visit an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia with a reputation for being haunted.
But when their old friend Dr. Denton summons them to help find his lost cousin-who went missing in that very mine-well, sometimes a sworn soldier has to do…
I always love Minka Kent reads, short chapters, small cast of characters that you get to know well, and this one was no exception.
Camille is a sociopath (well deserved by her upbringing with a truly horrible mother) and just wants to live a 'normal' life. She's done well so far, but when odd things start happening with her daughter she goes into full mama-bear mode.
I think her portrayal of sociopathy was well done, and not (too) overdone. I maybe could have used a couple less reminders about how 'I can't feel xyz emotion' but it wasn't cartoonish, so whatever.
The tension kept me guessing and though I was worried for a bit that we were going into a corner we couldn't get out of without impossible to follow logic jumps, I was happily proven wrong when the reveal finally came.
I did kind of want to shake Camille fairly often when she'd go on about how she just could not tell her husband about her past, because he seemed to have never given her reason to be so afraid to, but alas, if she had we'd have no story!
A woman must keep her family-and her terrifying secrets-safe in a twisting thriller by Washington Post and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Minka Kent.
Camille Prescott has it all. A doting husband, two children, a charming home in a seaside enclave, and a beautiful, fixed smile that exudes normalcy. But behind her polished mask lurks a much different Camille-one with a padlocked vault of secrets. Raised by a vindictive and psychotic woman, Camille has gone to great lengths to bury her past and for good reason: if her mother ever finds her, she will kill her.
Hazel Price has been missing for four years, and the night she and her friends were last seen is fog in her brain.
But she knows one thing: that night, she made the worst mistake of her life.
Now that she’s home, everyone is asking questions: her family, the police, and especially her therapist... and those questions are leading to answers, but as her memories come into focus, they aren’t what she expected.
Was that night really her fault? And if not, who exactly are all her lies protecting?
