My favorite read in 2026

Book cover of A Gentleman in Moscow

Darlene Foster ❤️ loved this book because...

A slow, meticulous, ordered and incredibly enjoyable read. I loved all the characters, including the Metropol hotel itself. Count Alexander Rostov, destined to spend the rest of his life in the hotel, handles his situation with grace, style and some fun. The book is cleverly written with wit and detailed description. There is a hilariously perfect description of a dog and cat encounter, and an episode of juggling oranges and knives that had me chuckling, to name a few. The Count's relationship with the hotel staff, patrons, and long-term residents is well depicted. There are many heartwarming moments. I also loved how Russia's history is woven into the story.

My 2nd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of The Correspondent

Darlene Foster ❤️ loved this book because...

This is a brilliantly written story about a complicated, contemporary woman, seen through her letters and emails. Sybil Van Antwerp is in her seventies and has been writing letters all her life. She is a hardworking, intelligent career woman; a friend, sister, mother and avid reader. Through her correspondence, we learn about those around her; her effect on them and their effect on her. I enjoyed all the characters; those with whom she corresponds, including well-known authors. (I loved that part). The sad reality is that she is losing her sight and may not be able to continue writing letters. She also has to come to grips with a past tragedy in order to move on. I loved this book; I could relate to Sybil. It will stay with me for a long time.

My 3rd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of The Weight of Snow and Regret

Darlene Foster ❤️ loved this book because...

This is a heart-wrenching story, well written by an author I admire. The time is 1968, and the last remaining poor farm in Vermont is about to be closed down. Hazel and Paul Morgan have been managing the poor farm for the past twenty years with efficiency and care. They are upset that it will be closed and are concerned about where the remaining residents will go to live. Because of her own tragic childhood, Hazel has a great deal of empathy for the people in her care. All the characters in the story are well described and very real. Everyone is a survivor in their own way. My heart broke for Hazel many times, and although her husband, Paul, is a bit difficult at times, his heart is in the right place. There has obviously been a lot of research done by the author, and the writing is strong because of it. The scenes are descriptive and emotional, and the era of the late 60s is well depicted. An exceptional story that will stick with you for a long time.
