I love Gary D. Schmidt! He is thoughtful, moral, ethical and we don't get a lot of that these days. But he is also "real" and evokes deep feelings. I want my grandchildren to devour his books as soon as they are old enough.

Instead of five, sometimes, we need six stars for a book, or maybe ten. This is an example of one of those books. I am so impressed with the writing. The story is thoughtful, complex, and unpredictable. What a gem! An absolute gift to be devoured by the fiction reader who wants to be completely immersed. You won't want it to end.
