Book cover of Blind Spots

Sharad P. Paul ❤️ loved this book because...

Marty Makary is a former Commissioner of the FDA. He writes about how groupthink has plagued medicine and led to things like the cholesterol myth, denial of HRT and the opioid addiction crisis. As a medical doctor myself who has spoken and written about healthcare systems and making medicine more patient-centred, this was a book that spoke to my heart. A must read--not only for doctors, but for everyone interested in their health!

Book cover of Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World

Sharad P. Paul ❤️ loved this book because...

One of the things access to the internet and social media has done is that we increasingly only see what we are exposed to. Therefore, people "doing their own research" often end up wandering into rabbit holes of misinformation. How does one differentiate fact from fiction, when AI is only going to make things worse? In a world where anyone can call themselves an expert, Bergstrom teaches us critical thinking and how we can understand that big data is not always correct, but can lead to false conclusions.

What is this book about?

Bullshit isn’t what it used to be. Now, two science professors give us the tools to dismantle misinformation and think clearly in a world of fake news and bad data.

“A modern classic . . . a straight-talking survival guide to the mean streets of a dying democracy and a global pandemic.”—Wired

Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound and it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s true. Our media environment has become hyperpartisan. Science is conducted by press release. Startup culture elevates bullshit to high art. We are fairly well equipped to spot the sort of old-school bullshit that is based…

Book cover of Lost Souls Meet Under a Full Moon

Sharad P. Paul ❤️ loved this book because...

As a writer of literary fiction myself, this was a mesmerising book. For anyone who has loved and lost, this is a powerful yet simple story of the power of love. Parents, TV stars, pet owners feature in this novel that combines magic realism and mystery, connections and closure in a simple plot: each reunion arranged by a mysterious child intermediary is a one-time arrangement that the dead can refuse. I picked it up and found it hard to put down. Completely unexpected find of the year for me.
