My favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Whisper of the Seals

Robert Craven ❤️ loved this book because...

Roxanne Bouchard captures perfectly the harsh environment of the Arctic seasons in this gripping tale set aboard a seal hunt ship. She tightens the pace like a tourniquet and is unapologetic in her characters.

A compelling read translated from Québécois to English by David Warriner

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of The Only Good Indians

Robert Craven ❤️ loved this book because...

Stephen Graham Jones creates a unique horror story through the eyes of Ricky, Gabe, Lewis and Cassidy, bound by their native American heritage find after a decade after a great Elk hunt that actions stir the spirit world.

Jones creates a relatable world with well realised characters, and the horror set pieces, while brief and visceral aren't gratuitous and propel the story to its inevitable end.

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

The Chalk Circle Man

Robert Craven ❤️ loved this book because...

Vargas' Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg is a unique creation, very French, very eccentric, but not irritatingly so. A series if random chalk circles start appearing on Paris streets, each containing a random item, Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg senses this is the beginnings of a serial killer spree and the tension quickly escalates as a woman's body is discovered in one.

Vargas has a wonderful engaging style that keeps the reader immersed.

1 author picked The Chalk Circle Man as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Winner of The Crime Writers' Association Duncan Lawrie International Dagger

Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg is not like other policemen. His methods appear unorthodox in the extreme: he doesn't search for clues; he ignores obvious suspects and arrests people with cast-iron alibis; he appears permanently distracted. In spite of all this his colleagues are forced to admit that he is a born cop.

When strange blue chalk circles start appearing overnight on the pavements of Paris, only Adamsberg takes them - and the increasingly bizarre objects found within them - seriously. And when the body of a woman with her throat savagely cut…
