A Small Person Far Away

❤️ loved this book because...

I loved the exploration of family dynamics, of the long-term effects of trauma in refugees and of memories. Although it dealt with some difficult topics, the author's ability to learn and grow and look forward to the future meant that this was a positive and uplifting read, even if it was tough in places.

What is this book about?

Partly autobiographical, this is the third title in Judith Kerr's internationally acclaimed trilogy of books following the life of Anna through war-torn Germany, to London during the Blitz and her return to Berlin to discover the past...

Berlin is where Anna lived before Hitler, when she was still a German child; before she spoke a word of English, before her family had all become refugees. Book cover of Black and British: A Forgotten History

❤️ loved this book because...

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone with even a vague interest in history. Such a detailed and carefully researched book could easily have ended up dry and boring, but Olusoga makes it incredibly readable. I loved its thoroughness and I learned so much from it.

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of An Imposter in Shetland

❤️ loved this book because...

I love the entire Shetland Sailing Mystery series, and the latest addition is especially good. I love character-driven crime novels with a strong sense of location and minimal violence/gore and Taylor delivers all of this. An Imposter in Shetland concerns the disappearance of an influencer who was not all she appeared to be. A cracking read that also encourages the reader to consider some ethical questions. It works as a standalone novel, but I think it is best enjoyed as part of the series.

Joining a boat trip to the remote islands of St Kilda with sailing sleuth Cass Lynch and her partner DI Gavin Macrae, the young woman seems more concerned with her phone than the scenery.

But when it's time to leave, there's no sign of her. Despite mounting a desperate search, she's seemingly vanished without trace - from a small island in the middle…
