❤️ loved this book because...

I started it just for a break from the more fantastical stories that I usually read. It swept me up with memorable characters, great plotting, clever writing, and an overall sense of fun. I don’t even like football/soccer. It’s just that good.

What is this book about?

Could a seemingly average Premier League fan oversee a football club better than a top manager? Max is starting to think so . . .

Max Best is not living his—ahem—best life. His job’s a drag, his home’s a shooting gallery, his hopes are nil, and lately, even his beloved game of football has devolved from a chaotic, ecstatic delight into a cold, calculating equation complete with stats, tech terms, and mindless lingo. But then Max rescues a mysterious old man from a mugging. “Nick” seems friendly enough . . . until he innocently asks his saviour, “Would you sell…

❤️ loved this book because...

At this point, I have been following this book for years. One of the things that I love the most about serialized storytelling is when an author will hint at something in the story or world only for the author to return to it much later in a surprising way that shows the immense detail and plotting that has gone into the story. This story does that kind of storytelling better than anything else in the genre with small details from early chapters coming back to importance a thousand chapters later. It’s not a perfect story, but it rewards reading it better than anything else out there.

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Hell Difficulty Tutorial

❤️ loved this book because...

While the trappings of the story are familiar in the genre, a system apocalypse, a tutorial, quests, and experience, Cerim manages to make it all feel fresh through the lens of his main character. The genre is filled with characters that seek to improve themselves and are battle crazy. Cerim gives us Nathaniel who is all that, but is willing to do truly audacious and surprising things for power. It’s always a fun read as you experience the world through Nathaniel’s eyes and watch him grow and change in ways that surprise himself and even in ways that he doesn’t fully recognize.

What is this book about?

Where others see doom, he sees opportunity. Hell Difficulty? More like a chance to thrive.

Nathaniel's bus ride was supposed to be just another boring commute. Wrong. Now, he, 23 fellow passengers, and a corgi named Biscuit, are stuck in a "Hell Difficulty" Tutorial, battling monsters and leveling up to survive.

Easy difficulty, anyone can handle. Normal difficulty, you've got to put up a fight to get by. Hard difficulty is where only the tough ones last. And Hell? That's where you have to be a bit out of your mind!

With his terrifying talent for mana manipulation, Nathaniel decides…
