My favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Heretical Fishing: A Cozy Guide to Annoying the Cults, Outsmarting the Fish, and Alienating Oneself

Nathan Lowell ❤️ loved this book because...

Lately I've been reading a lot of these isekai/progression fantasies. I also identify strongly with the sea and spent much of my younger days fishing. This series is funny, irreverent, often over the top, but retains a core of caring that left me feeling good.

What is this book about?

A world abandoned by the gods, mystifying cosmic forces, unimaginable power for those willing to ascend, and a hero who would rather . . . go fishing???

When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn’t like most MCs. In fact, he doesn’t want to be a hero at all.

Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes…

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of One More Last Time

Nathan Lowell ❤️ loved this book because...

I read very fast so finding a series that can keep me entertained for more than a few days is a godsend. Ugland's Good Guys series stretches for 16 volumes as I write this and I burned through every one. Another isekai/litRPG that had me wishing for an immersive pod and the MMO to play.

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked One More Last Time as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A ruined life. A broken heart.

He thought it was the end, and his gun sat ready to make sure.

But an oddball offer from his only friend comes at the literal last second. Curiosity gets the best of him, and he finds himself sucked into iNcarn8, a game claiming to be a whole new life. Now as Montana, the larger-than-life tank warrior, he has one more last time to get his life right.

One More Last time is the first book in The Good Guys, a LitRPG GameLit series. If you like fast-paced adventure, RPG mechanics, and sweet level…

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of The Recruitment

Nathan Lowell ❤️ loved this book because...

A dark read of alien invasion and induction. Not really a feel good story but one that pulled me in and kept me reading volume after volume. Chatfield is on my list of "read (almost) everything authors" and he did not disappoint me on this one. A classic tale of ratcheting stakes, ever more powerful enemies, and even more powerful friends. Power armor fans will like this one.

The Wizard's Butler

By Nathan Lowell ,

Book cover of The Wizard's Butler

What is my book about?

Blacklisted and facing eviction, ex-EMT Roger Mulligan applies for whatever job comes his way. When he goes to a rather unconventional interview in a spooky old mansion with a pair of gold-digging relatives, he enters a world that he could only imagine existing.

They told him the old man thought he was a wizard.

They didn't tell him about the pixies.
