It deals with a period of history I find fascinating the American Civil War and told from a unique angle of Varina Davis Wife of the Confederate President. Although I did find one thing irritating the use of just 'V' when referring to the main character how long does it take to type out Varina.
The new novel from the number one bestselling author of Cold Mountain - a stunning portrait of the devastation left by the American Civil War, as seen through the eyes of a woman who played a part at the heart of it.
Sooner or later, history asks: which side were you on?

Written with the characteristic wit and good humour, Leslie Thomas's novel tells the story of a grown man who runs away from home, and the adventures that befall him in his quest for a new lease of life. His latest love affair discovered (thanks to an observant fifteen-year-old daughter who points out the still-wet suds of expensive soap lingering in his ear), bestselling author Nicholas Boulting sets off amid a torrent of abuse to see what else life can offer. During my reading year I always re-read a favourite from the past this year it was East of Eden the book that introduced me to Steinbeck I still love it. Is there a better character than Lee I doubt it. I also read it for a friend who sadly died during the year who always said it was a Steinbeck he meant to read.

Over the generations, between the beginning of the twentieth century and the end of the First World War, the Trasks and the Hamiltons will helplessly replay the fall of Adam and Eve and the murderous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
East of Eden was considered by Steinbeck to be his magnum opus, and its epic scope and memorable characters, exploring universal themes of love and identity, ensure it remains one of America's most enduring novels. This edition features a stunning new cover by renowned…
'There it is the city of Liverpool' says Henry Kitto, master of the Hannah Leigh three days out of Fowey in Cornwall with a cargo of China Clay standing beside Ben Pascoe, 'a cesspool of humanity and no mistake. Yet full of opportunity for them that can grab it.' Thus Ben sets out to make his fortune unbeknown to him from the sides that would fight the American Civil War on the streets of the city. A city that was said to fly more Rebel flags than the capital of the Confederate States at Richmond, Virginia. There is a fortune to be made and lost in trade with the Confederacy by running the Yankee blockade. Perfect for fans of Robert Harris and William Boyd.
