Book cover of Breath and Bone

❤️ loved this book because...

I adored being in this character's head. Valen is a flawed, and morally complicated individual, but his outlook on everything takes a world that would be pretty dark and suffuses it with so much life and warmth. His character growth throughout the series was very satisfying although I was genuinely sad finishing the series, as it meant that his story was over.

Carol Berg's writing is, as always excellent, though the pacing of the first book (Flesh and Spirit), is slower and and does a lot of heavy lifting with the setup.

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of The Works of Vermin

❤️ loved this book because...

This book was super weird and very original - everything felt over the top but in a way that really worked.

I really enjoyed all the characters (the protagonists and the antagonists), as well as the setting. It was a novel where the elements wouldn't have necessarily worked on their own, but harmonized extremely well together in that the characters felt very organic to the setting. A little confusing at the start of the book when I was still getting my footing, but by the end of it, everything just made sense.

(The audiobook performance was really well done, and I think the narrator nailed the tone)

Book cover of The Curse of Chalion

❤️ loved this book because...

A simple story of good vs evil, but I enjoyed the heroes being heroes and good.

Terrible stuff would happen to the protagonist, but he would always do what was right, and wasn't constantly punished for being a good person. It was refreshing.
