Book cover of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Lawrence Grobel ❤️ loved this book because...

I got this novel for my wife, but once I read her the beginning, she had to wait until I finished it before she could read it. It’s one of those books. It won a lot of awards when it was published and it became a Broadway play, and I can see why. Christopher Boone is on the spectrum, a teenager who doesn’t understand lies, emotions, and dislikes being touched. He does understand numbers, including prime numbers into the thousands, and knows all the countries and their capitals. He lives with his father, and when a neighbor’s dog is murdered, he sets out to investigate who did it. It’s not a simple story, but it’s told in a simple way that is easy to read, and a true page-turner. I like to find books that make you want to forgo television and this is one of them. I told my wife I couldn’t put it down, and then she got to have the same experience. Hats off to Mark Haddon.

'Mark Haddon's portrayal of an emotionally dissociated mind is a superb achievement... Wise and bleakly funny' Ian McEwan

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel like no other. The detective, and narrator, is Christopher Boone. Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger's Syndrome. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns and the truth. He hates the colours yellow and brown and being touched. He has never gone further than the…

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of 1984

Lawrence Grobel ❤️ loved this book because...

“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were strikng thirteen.” So begins one of the most perceptive and terrifying books of the 20th Century, a book that should be read as a primer of what to expect if the man in the White House continues on the path he and those who control his thinking keep going. I read 1984 in 1964 and by then, maybe a third of the predictions in the book had come to pass. Twenty years later, and closer to 80% are no longer speculative. I reread it this year with sadness and continue to marvel at Orwell’s genius. He wrote of the Thought Police, we’re experiencing ICE agents; he had Big Brother, we have Donald Trump. They burned books, we ban books. “WAR is PEACE, FREEDOM is SLAVERY, IGNORANCE is STRENGTH” is what the people are told. And today, our Defense Department is now the Department of War; our freedoms are challenged at every turn; and our government’s ignorance is their strength. We should all be rereading 1984….and be doing something to keep it from becoming totally nonfiction.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU . . .

1984 is the year in which it happens. The world is divided into three superstates. In Oceania, the Party's power is absolute. Every action, word, gesture and thought is monitored under the watchful eye of Big Brother and the Thought Police. In the Ministry of Truth, the Party's department for propaganda, Winston Smith's job is to edit the past. Over time, the impulse to escape the machine and live independently takes hold of him and he embarks on a secret and forbidden love affair. As he writes the words 'DOWN WITH BIG…

Book cover of Disloyal: A Memoir: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump

Lawrence Grobel 👍 liked this book because...

I didn’t think I’d read Michael Cohen’s book when it came out because I watched his Congressional testimony and believed what he had to say. But I picked it up on a trip and couldn’t put it down. I didn’t know about Cohen’s teenage connection to mobsters and how he got to understand the mind of the gangster, and how he was able to understand how Donald Trump thought and behaved like a Mob boss. It made perfect sense. “My insatiable desire to please Trump…that led to my ruination, was a Faustian bargain,” Cohen writes about his becoming Trump’s Roy Cohn, “I would do anything to accumulate, wield, maintain, exert, exploit power. In this way, Donald Trump and I were the most alike; in this naked lust for power, the President and I were soul mates.” Cohen gives example after example of how “Trump viewed anything that could hurt his brand or name as a mortal threat….The task…was to bury the truth [or] to distort it beyond recognition, to sow doubt and confusion and even fear.” Cohen’s went to prison because he was loyal to Trump; he came out loyal to our country. I hope some of the other Trump cronies follow suit…..before it’s too late.

A #1 New York Times Bestseller!

"I read it cover-to-cover. I did not intend to, but I started at the beginning and didn't put it down until it was over."-Rachel Maddow, MSNBC

This book almost didn't see the light of day as government officials tried to bar its publication.
The Inside Story of the Real President Trump, by His Former Attorney and Personal Advisor-The Man Who Helped Get Him Into the Oval Office

Once Donald Trump's fiercest surrogate, closest confidant, and staunchest defender, Michael Cohen knows where the skeletons are buried.

This is the most devastating business and political horror…

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Turquoise

By Lawrence Grobel ,

Book cover of Turquoise

What is my book about?

I wrote TURQUOISE while I was serving in the Peace Corps and teaching at the Institute ofJournalism in Accra, Ghana from 1968-71. The title comes from what the sculptor Vincent Kofi said when I asked him what was the Truth in art. “Truth is like the color turquoise,” he said, “it changes under different light.” I thought that fit the description of my “truth” about Africa. A very different truth, I’m sure, than from a native’s perspective. I sent a section of it to an editor at Doubleday at the time, and he was enthusiastic about it. But when I finished it and returned to New York with the manuscript, I was told that he was no longer with Doubleday, and I wound up putting the book away and turned to journalism. 53 years later, I opened a file cabinet and found the manuscript. I read through it, found it still worked (mostly) and edited it for publication. It brought me back to the three years I spent in West Africa, dancing and drumming at festivals, getting close to many Ghanaians, falling in love, dealing with bribery and corruption, traveling throughout West and East Africa, and seeing life differently than how I had previously experienced it. After it was published, Peace Corps Worldwide named it the Best Memoir of the Year in 2023. It just goes to show you that you should never give up on a manuscript. Even if it takes half a century to see the light. Here's the link:
