Book cover of The Horse

Kayla Anderson ❤️ loved this book because...

Willy Vlautin is known to create characters that have gone through such hard times that you just want to scoop them up and give them a hot meal, warm shower, roof over their head for a night, and a million bucks. That goes for both people and animals, like The Horse. It's heartbreaking and heartwarming, just like the author in person.

Willy Vlautin's most personal novel yet - a poetic and deeply moving story about what it really takes to be a musician.

Al Ward, an ageing musician, is living on old mining land in Nevada. One morning, a horse arrives outside his home, unable to feed itself or stay safe from coyotes. Six thousand feet up, thirty miles from the nearest town, and broken by alcoholism and anxiety, Al must decide what to do.

Book cover of Getting There

Kayla Anderson ❤️ loved this book because...

I just read something on another writer's Substack in which she said, "It's easy to write a book, it's hard to finish it, and it's effortless to talk about it." Reading Getting There helped me finish writing my book because of the years of tenacity these mentors put in to reach their goals, which was a constant reminder of the effort and time it takes to become great.

Book cover of Consider This

Kayla Anderson ❤️ loved this book because...

I've loved Chuck Palahniuk's style of writing ever since I picked up his first book (which wasn't Fight Club-- I think that's the only one I haven't read). As a fellow writer, I was thrilled to finally read his craft book right in the middle of when I was working on my memoir. It taught me a lot, but mostly how to write bravely.
