My favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Lapvona

❤️ loved this book because...

The best horror book I’ve ever read. The characters are depraved, the twists are unexpected, and it’s told with a blunt, matter-of-factness I’ve never experienced while still being full of emotion. Moshfegh’s writing is unparalleled.

What is this book about?

An Instant New York Times Bestseller!

“Lapvona flips all the conventions of familial and parental relations, putting hatred where love should be or a negotiation where grief should be . . . Through a mix of witchery, deception, murder, abuse, grand delusion, ludicrous conversations, and cringeworthy moments of bodily disgust, Moshfegh creates a world that you definitely don’t want to live in, but from which you can’t look away.” —The Atlantic

In a village in a medieval fiefdom buffeted by natural disasters, a motherless shepherd boy finds himself the unlikely pivot of a power struggle that puts all manner of…

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of A Memory Called Empire

❤️ loved this book because...

While the sci-fi machinations can be a little bit handwavey, Martin more than makes up for it with the depth of her characters and political world building. Defining it as a space opera is accurate, but it doesn’t come with the complex overhead common in the genre; it’s a fast-paced read constantly pulling you in to find out what happens in just the next chapter.

This incredible opening to the duology recalls the best of John le Carre, Iain M. Banks's Culture novels and Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Inanna as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

An enthralling and lyrical fantasy debut, and the first in an incredible new trilogy re-telling The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Brimming full of warring gods, rebellious humans, and the goddess of love caught between them whose destiny has the power to transform the shape of the world, this is perfect for readers of Madeline Miller and Jennifer Saint.

Stories are sly things...they can be hard to catch and kill.

Inanna is an impossibility, the first full Anunnaki born on Earth in Ancient Mesopotamia. Crowned the goddess of love by the twelve immortal Anunnaki who are worshipped across Sumer, she is destined…
