What is this book about?

Updated with the latest archaeological research new chapters on the most influential yet widely unrecognised people of the British isles, In Search of the Dark Ages illuminates the fascinating and mysterious centuries between the Romans and the Norman Conquest of 1066.

In this new edition, Michael Wood vividly conjures some of the most important people in British history such as Hadrian, a Libyan refugee from the Arab conquests and arguably the most important person of African origin in British history, to Queen Boadicea, the leader of a terrible war of resistance against the Romans.

Book cover of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

❀️ loved this book because...

Despite being set in a soviet-era Gulag in northern Russian, I found this book oddly uplifting. The charming protagonist, a prisoner in a forced labour camp, is just trying to get through the day, and I found myself cheering for him at every turn.

By Alexander Solzhenitsyn ,

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Foreshadowing his later detailed accounts of the Soviet prison-camp system, Solzhenitsyn's classic portrayal of life in the gulag is all the more powerful for being slighter and more personal than those later monumental volumes. Continuing the tradition of the great nineteenth-century Russian novelists, especially Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn is fully worthy of them in narrative power and moral authority. His greatest work.

Book cover of Fire Weather: A True Story From a Hotter World

❀️ loved this book because...

This is a day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour account of the 2016 Fort McMurray fire that is so immersive I often felt like I was there. John Valliant is also an incredible researcher, I learned a lot about fire fighting, climate change, and the people who work in the oil industry. A completely fascinating read!
