I have been waiting for this memoir for 5+ years. I don't want any more bad things to happen to this author, but gosh darn it, she sure can create a great memoir out dire circumstances. I thought it would be be about love and loss. And it was. But it was so much more. It was about addiction and recovery and attempted murder and faith and life and death. This extraordinary intersection of all these concepts has produced a memoir that is excruciating, gut-wrenching and raw to the bone. Needless to say, I loved it. Sure it went into the crazy woo-woo but wherever the author was taking me, I was going along for the ride. This book does what only very good books do - makes me see the world differently. It will stay with me for a long, long time. My book of the year. Phenomenal.
"A delicious mashup of narrative that's by turns harrowing and healing." –People
“Entertaining, insightful, wrenching ... punch-to-the-gut powerful.” –The Washington Post
“A blockbuster: brutally honest, lurid, transcendent, and compelling...Gilbert is undoubtedly a force.” —Boston Globe
In her first nonfiction book in a decade, the #1 bestselling writer who taught millions of readers to live authentically (Eat Pray Love) and creatively (Big Magic) shows how to break free.
In 2000, Elizabeth Gilbert met Rayya. They became friends, then best friends, then inseparable. When tragedy entered their lives, the truth was finally…
This is a story that needed to be told. It would have taken a lot for the author to put it out there. She is currently being stopped by her old workplace to promote it. This book is full of interesting anecdotes. She was bitten by a shark as a teen and then ended up working for a whole bunch of sharks (I am probably being too mean to sharks with this analogy; they are beautiful creatures). I did find some sections of the book a little meandering, some stories didn't ring entirely true and the author needs to take a bit more responsibility on the part she played in the way her workplace caused and responded to events. Overall, however, this book is raw, shocking and entertaining - all marks of of great memoir. Highly recommended and I am not saying that because I am a Kiwi like the author. This is a bloody good read.

“Careless People is darkly funny and genuinely shocking...Not only does [Sarah Wynn-Williams] have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods." -Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times
“When one of the world's most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book ― amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this ― it's time to pull out all the stops.” –Ron Charles, The Washington Post
This book falls into a particular murder mystery niche I really go for - snarky, sexy, dark comedy murder mystery. It has a great premise and delivers on it. How can you resist a book where a true crime podcaster teams up with the person accused of murder to find the real killer? I have to say the ending could have been a bit sharper and there were probably almost too many characters and twists and turns but it was a fun ride anyway. I usually don't like audiobooks with multiple voices and musical interludes but this book knocked it out of the park with how professionally it was narrated and produced. Everyone in my book club is reading this book right now and we are not a book club who reads the same book. Highly recommended.
