My favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Lion Hearts

James Charles ❤️ loved this book because...

Rollicking historical fiction. Great fictional characters mixed into historical context with real characters. You not only learn a bit about the beginning of the Hundred Years War, its causes and effects upon the people, but have fun with the Essex Dogs, a squad of mixed characters with all their flaws.

What is this book about?

The thrilling, unmissable conclusion to the Essex Dogs trilogy by the New York Times bestselling historian Dan Jones

1350. The Essex Dogs have scattered. In Winchelsea, Loveday struggles to keep his tavern afloat in the aftermath of the Black Death. Nowadays, the only battles he fights are the ones within his own mind.

In Windsor, Romford thrives as a squire at King Edward III's court, his days as an archer fading into memory. But when an unpaid debt threatens everything he's built, Romford must call upon the lessons he learned all those years ago: be cunning. Be ruthless. Be quick.…

Book cover of The Routledge Handbook of the War of 1812

James Charles ❤️ loved this book because...

Learned much about a war that is not really taught in American schools. Probably because it was almost meaningless with not much changed as a result. Learned about its causes, effects, and outcomes. This book is a comprehensive look at a mostly forgotten American war.

What is this book about?

The War of 1812 ranged over a remarkably large territory, as the fledgling United States battled Great Britain at sea and on land across what is now the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada. Native people and the Spanish were also involved in the war's interrelated conflicts. Often overlooked, the War of 1812 has been the subject of an explosion of new research over the past twenty-five years. The Routledge Handbook of the War of 1812 brings together the insights of this research through an array of fresh essays by leading scholars in the field, offering an overview of…

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Le Morte D'Arthur

James Charles ❤️ loved this book because...

Well, I just had to read the classic of classics to get it from the orginal's head; Malory's that is. Followed all the bloody battles with King Arthur and all his knights, including the famous Sir Lancelot. What a fantastic, yet bloody time it was.
