Elana Gomel 👍 liked this book because...

This is the most interesting take on the idea of multiverse I have seen. However, the book has some flaws. Stunning imagery and mind-blowing ideas coexist with the plot that collapses under the weight of its own complexity.

Book cover of The Invincible

Elana Gomel ❤️ loved this book because...

Lem is one of the best sci-fi writers ever, and this is one of his best books. In my opinion, it is better than Solaris. Need I say more? A scientific mystery; philosophical depth; and stunning descriptions of the alien world.

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked The Invincible as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A space cruiser, in search of its sister ship, encounters beings descended from self-replicating machines.

In the grand tradition of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, Stanisław Lem's The Invincible tells the story of a space cruiser sent to an obscure planet to determine the fate of a sister spaceship whose communication with Earth has abruptly ceased. Landing on the planet Regis III, navigator Rohan and his crew discover a form of life that has apparently evolved from autonomous, self-replicating machines—perhaps the survivors of a “robot war.” Rohan and his men are forced to confront the classic quandary: what course…

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Lexicon

Elana Gomel ❤️ loved this book because...

A great central idea - language that kills - somewhat marred by inconsistent point of view and occasionally slow action. Still, worth reading (an no, it won't kill you).

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked Lexicon as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Two years ago, something terrible was unleashed in an Australian mining town called Broken Hill. Thousands died.

Few people know what really happened.

Emily Ruff is one of them. She belongs to an elite organisation of 'poets': masters of manipulation who use language to warp others to their will. She was one of their most promising recruits until she made a catastrophic mistake: she fell in love.

Wil Parke knows the truth too, only he doesn't remember it. And he doesn't know why he's immune to the poets' powers. But he knows he needs to run.

As their stories converge,…

Nine Levels

By Elana Gomel ,

Book cover of Nine Levels

What is my book about?

Waking up on the beach in Greece after a midnight party, Cleo, a British-Greek tourist, sees a stranger sitting next to her. The stranger has a giant spider on his forearm.
So begins an incredible odyssey through the nine levels of the mysterious mountain populated by an odd assortment of monsters, demons, and avatars of dead gods. Still grieving the unsolved disappearance of her twin sister Cora, Cleo is thrust into the world whose rules she does not understand and whose inhabitants confound everything she thought she knew about Greek mythology. Confronted by Woven Women, masked huntresses, sentient graffiti, and Mother of Monsters, Cleo has to make sense of it all. And meanwhile, a mysterious Call reverberates in her brain: You have to go up. You have to find your sister.
A story of self-discovery, courage, and breathtaking adventure, Nine Levels is a highly imaginative, innovative, and engrossing retelling of familiar legends with a twist you won’t see coming.
