Book cover of Red Rising

David Wickenden ❤️ loved this book because...

In the future, humanity has settled throughout the solar system. Humanity has been divided into colours, with Gold ruling and the Reds slaves. Each colour knows its place until a ruling Gold hangs a young Red. This starts the beginning of a rebellion. Darrow, the husband of the murdered woman, gives up his humanity to be transformed into a Gold.
Sent to the Institute with other young Golds, he must learn to fight and survive in a society that awards only the strong. Only by winning does he gain admittance to the society so that he might strike from within.
This story has everything. Humour, action galore, betrayal, loyalty and romance. I listened to the audio version which came to life under the expert narration of Tim Gerald Reynolds. I ate up the first three novels in non-stop marathon reading.

Follett delivers again and proves why he’s a master storyteller.
This time, Follett takes us back to 2500 BC England, where the tribes are defined by their professions. They are herders, farmer, miners, and woodsmen. When the original temple is destroyed by a neighbouring tribe, a young priestess, Joia, is determined to rebuild using stone. As alliances and betrayals dodge the different characters through a life-altering drought, Jolia, and her brother-in-law, Seft, plan to use the building of the temple as a way to appease the gods.
This is a fantastic story that proposes an idea of how ancient man may have built Stonehenge, which stands today as an ageless tribute to mankind’s ingenuity and resourcefulness.

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of The Secret of Secrets

David Wickenden ❤️ loved this book because...

Brown brings forth another fast-paced thriller that has little to do with history, as so many of his past novels do. Rather, it looks at consciousness.
Robert Langdon is in Prague to attend a lecture by his love-interest, Katherine Solomon. What should be a celebration of a new look at how we look at reality becomes a nightmare as invisible forces are at work trying to destroy all that she has researched.
Nothing is as it seems, and Robert and Katherine are unable to trust anyone, while the bodies add up. The action is hair-raising as the science is mind-bending. Hold on for one hell of a ride.
