Red as Blood is a collection of fairy tale retellings by the late Tanith Lee. The stories are set in time periods ranging from the distant past to the future. In the title story, Lee retells Snow White, making the princess the villain and the stepmother the heroine. This story, nominated for the Nebula Award in 1979, was my favorite but all the stories take familiar fairy tales and give them thought-provoking and clever twists.
What if Snow White were the real villain and the "wicked queen" just a sadly
maligned innocent? What if awakening Sleeping Beauty would be the mistake of a
lifetime - of several lifetimes? What if the famous folk tales were retold
with an eye to more horrific possibilities? Only Tanith Lee -
"Goddess-Empress of the Hot Read" (Village Voice) - could retell the
world-famous tales of the Brothers Grimm (and others) as they might have been
told by the Sisters Grimmer!
This special edition, conjured together for the 30th Anniversary of the
original edition, adds a new Grimmer fairy taleâŠ
On the surface, this is a love story about a monster and a girl who also happens to be a monster hunter. I related to the introverted monster who just wanted to be left alone to go about her business, but finds she can't ignore what's going on around her and finds love in the most improbable of places. By turns this book was sweet, funny, exciting, and horrific.

"Wiswell raises the bar on the outcast as protagonist . . . the ultimate monster slayer story, if the monster is just a misunderstood creature searching for love." - Kristi Chadwick, Library Journal (starred review)

This was a delightful penny dreadful-style vampire yarn set in the New Orleans French Quarter. The story was fresh and the characters felt real. That said, what really pushes this book over the top for me is that every chapter includes a recipe from the New Orleans Vampire Cafe. So, reading the book and making the food felt like a thrilling visit to the Crescent City.
A bloody romp through the French Quarter, including over 30 delectable recipes by Chef Chris Dunn
New Orleans is filled with mysteries and legends. Ghosts that haunt our city, rougarou (a werewolf-like creature that dwells in the swamps), and vampires. Maidens who were sent from France in 1721 to help colonize the city but were mysteriously turned to vampires on the ship before their arrival. There are also witchesâsome with remedies and some with curses. They say New Orleans is a melting pot of cultures. If one delves deep into this melting pot,âŠ
A new generation of vampires embarks on a quest to save humanity.
Opening a forgotten crypt during a military exercise, Dr. Jane Heckman is made a vampire and begins a journey to unlock the secret origins of her new kindred.
Elsewhere, solitary vampire Marcella DuBois emerges from the shadows and uncovers a government plot to create vampire-like super soldiers.
Daniel McKee, a vampire working as an astronomer, moves to a new town where he's adopted by a family, only to have government agents strip those he loves away from him.
All three vampires discover the government is dabbling in technologies so advanced they'll tap into realms and dimensions they don't understand. To save humans and vampires alike, Jane, Marcella, and Daniel must seek out the legendary master vampire Desmond, Lord Draco and encourage him to resurrect his band of mercenaries, the Scarlet Order.
