Book cover of The Hive

❤️ loved this book because...

The main character Feldspar was the single most affecting protagonist I have read all year. Her journey from a brainwashed tool of an oppressive society, barely even realizing that she is a person in her own right, to someone who comes into her own and begins to challenge the world around her, is something I really needed to read in the times we currently live in. Maybe there is hope for humanity after all. To be honest I would have read a book about Feldspar no matter what was going on, but her journey takes place in the middle of a twisty murder plot that stands up in its own right. Don't let the YA tag fool you - all the best YA books have far more packed into them than their length would suggest, and The Hive is no exception.

My 2nd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Dragonfall

❤️ loved this book because...

L.R. Lam has been a favourite author of mine for a while now. They offer such a refreshing take on life, free from the default heteronormative assumptions that are built in to so many books. Arcady's world is one without gender essentialism and all the more fascinating for it. But I'm not recommending this book on the strength of that alone, worthwhile as it is. There are also dragons, heists, romance and all sorts of other classic elements that will make this book appeal to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy plot. Come for the dragons, stay for the broadening of your worldview.

Book cover of Sisters in the Wind

❤️ loved this book because...

I think my favourite books this year have been those that offered new perspectives on the world, and this one is no different. The main character discovers her Indigenous heritage and we get to discover it alongside her. There are some hard-hitting insights into the foster care system and how shockingly it has treated Indigenous children in particular, alongside a truly emotional journey for Lucy as she comes to terms with her past. It's not always an easy read, but certainly worthwhile.
