Book cover of The Sparrow

❤️ loved this book because...

We learn about historical colonization in school. As adults the political discussions/debates engage us intellectually. In this fiction account we go to an alien world to FEEL what happens when cultures clash. This is possible because the author is very skillful at characterization. She paces the plot so it reveals much, but never enough (there is a sequel).

What is this book about?

'The Sparrow is one of my favourite science fiction novels and it destroyed me in the best way when I read it. It is so beautifully written and the construction of the narrative is masterful.'
Emma Newman, acclaimed author of Planetfall

Set in the 21st century - a number of decades from now - The Sparrow is the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and talented linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who - in response to a remarkable radio signal from the depths of space - leads a scientific mission to make first contact with an extraterrestrial culture.

In the true tradition…

Book cover of The Potato Factory

❤️ loved this book because...

A bit of history. An immersion into the criminal mind and a world where lying, cheating, whoring, and deception is daily life for a group of characters who live in 1700s London. You would think a reader would feel negative emotions but no. I loved these characters. They charmed me and impressed me by their struggles to survive against odds that would leave you or I, in today's world, in jail or dead from starvation long before adulthood. It's a long read, but the pace is steady. Highly recommended.

Book cover of Mona's Eyes

❤️ loved this book because...

This is a short course in art history. It is disguised as a novel about a young precocious French girl and her grandfather, but it's really about art--understanding it and appreciating it. So, for me, a novice in this subject, it was a learning experience--an armchair class. The characters spend 52 days, one day a week, in front of an artifact in one of three French museums. That artifact is described, the life of the artist is summarized and placed in historical context. The book cover opens up to show all 52, but I had a library copy and the cover was pasted down, so I had to use my phone to discover them. That process led me down many rabbit holes, so be warned. If you like this subject it might take more than a little time to complete the book. I now have a deeper appreciation (relative to before reading this book) of the great work done by artists from antiquity to present day. I was less impressed by the plot--found it contrived--but it intrigued me enough to end up engaged in the "meat" of the book.
