My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Dungeon Crawler Carl

S.E. Babin ❤️ loved this book because...

LitRPG was never a genre I read until I kept getting hammered over the head with this book in all my online book groups. As soon as I read the first page, I was completely hooked! So funny, so fresh, so original, Carl is a main character we can't help but root for. Even though the odds are stacked against him, Carl keeps plugging along and surviving.

At times, this book is heartbreaking, but there's one consistent thread through the entire series: hope. You can't help but fall in love with all these characters and root for them to stick it to the man.

Why should I read it?

112 authors picked Dungeon Crawler Carl as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The apocalypse will be televised!

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible.

In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth—from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds—collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground.

The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot. A dungeon so enormous, it circles the entire globe.

Only a few dare venture inside. But once you're…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Fated: The First Alex Verus Novel from the New Master of Magical London

S.E. Babin ❤️ loved this book because...

Alex is a character who isn't all that powerful when we first meet him. But he's crafty like a fox, and that's what keeps him alive. Shunned by most of magical society, Alex spends his days running a small magic shop and keeping his head down.

Of course, that all comes crashing down soon enough, thrusting Alex into the high stakes world of magical society. I LOVED these books. Alex is a diviner, a mage who can see the future, but those futures change on a dime, so Alex has to be clever, quick, and witty to stay one step ahead of those hunting him.

This novel has a great found family thread and gets consistently darker the longer the series runs. I was hooked from the very first page.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Benedict Jacka ,

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked Fated as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The start of a compelling new urban fantasy series based in Camden, featuring Alex Verus - a mage with a dark past who can see the future . . .

***The million-copy-selling series***

'Harry Dresden would like Alex Verus tremendously - and be a little nervous around him. I just added Benedict Jacka to my must-read list. Fated is an excellent novel, a gorgeously realized world with a uniquely powerful, vulnerable protagonist. Books this good remind me why I got into the storytelling business in the first place' Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying

S.E. Babin ❤️ loved this book because...

You gotta love a character who finally gets fed up with everyone's BS and decides to do the complete opposite of what's expected of her. That's Davi in a nutshell. Plus, every time she dies, no one remembers anything, especially not her, so she has a tactical advantage from the get-go.

This book is hilariously funny. Davi is witty and a bit of a horndog, but she's also loyal to the people she cares about. I couldn't help but root for the bad guys in this one.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Django Wexler ,

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Groundhog Day meets Deadpool in Django Wexler’s raunchy, hilarious, blood-splattered fantasy tale about a young woman who, tired of defending humanity from the Dark Lord, decides to become the Dark Lord herself.

"Takes the old saying 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em,' to the next level. A sarcastic, action-packed, intrigue-filled (mis)adventure. One of the funniest books I've read in a long time."--Matt Dinniman, author of Dungeon Crawler Carl

Davi has done this all before. She’s tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord. A hundred times she’s rallied humanity and made the final charge. But…

A Twist of Demon

By S.E. Babin ,

Book cover of A Twist of Demon

What is my book about?

Want longer hair, whiter teeth, a smaller nose?

Violet has a potion for that.

Want to hex an enemy, make someone fall in love with you, or curse someone?

Well…that will cost you.

By day, Violet is a supposed charlatan running a potion shop in New Orleans and catering to drunk tourists who want to take a walk on the wild side. By night, she’s a Potion Master, a rare, magical being whose shop straddles the portal to Earth and Hell, slinging potions to magical beasts who only come out at night.

She’s also the protector of both, a neutral being who carefully navigates the Accords between oblivious humans and the creatures who wouldn’t mind snacking on them. Unfortunately for both sides, Violet is terrible at her job.

After the last Potion Master dies a horrible death and she’s pulled out of anonymity by a handsome and super annoying demon, Violet’s shop transforms and she’s thrust into unwanted instafame. And not the good kind, either.

Suddenly, everyone either wants to date her, or they want to kill her.

And, honestly? Violet isn’t sure which one is easier anymore.
