Book cover of My Best Stories

❤️ loved this book because...

This was a collection of short stories Munro chose herself from the many she has written. Each one featured unique characters (with a few common threads) unique settings ranging from Victoria to Ontario and around the world, and solid serious writing capable of creating small worlds for the reader to briefly dwell in.

What is this book about?

My Best Stories   is a dazzling selection of stories—seventeen favourites chosen by the author from across her distinguished career. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were written, allowing even the most devoted Munro admirer to discover how her work developed. "Royal Beatings" shows us right away how far we are from the romantic world of happy endings. "The Albanian Virgin" smashes the idea that all of her stories are set in B.C. or in Ontario's "Alice Munro Country." "A Wilderness Station" breaks short story rules by transporting us back to the 1830s and then jumping forward…

Book cover of Station Eleven

❤️ loved this book because...

I think I found this book in a community small library, and it sat in my unread pile for quite a while. After I decided to start it one night, and managed to work my way through the time and character twisting that was set up, I didn't want to put it down. I knew nothing about the author nor her body of work, but made sure I passed the book along to others who were also transfixed by it!

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Cuckoo's Calling

❤️ loved this book because...

I'm always looking for a good detective series while waiting for the next Rebus (by Ian Rankin) to come out, and the owner of the local book store recommended Galbraith to me. It contained interesting characters and was a good mystery that lead me to searching out nore of the series. I was also tickled that Galbraith (a pen name for J. K. Rowling) also spent a lot of time sitting in a coffe shop writing with Rankin before they were each eventually "discovered".
