Laurie Dubay ❤️ loved this book because...

There's something special about loving a book when you don't like the main characters. A retired death metalist with a yen for disturbing artifacts speaks to the Gen X in me, and the way Hill infuses traditional horror with smooth, raw prose and his uniquely unsettling perspective keeps me hooked on his work.

What is this book about?

'Buy my stepfather's ghost' read the e-mail.

So Jude did.

He bought it, in the shape of the dead man's suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it: because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books and all the rest of the paraphanalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock.

But the rest of his collection doesn't make the house feel cold. The bones don't make the dogs bark; the movie doesn't make Jude feel…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Flight Behavior

Laurie Dubay ❤️ loved this book because...

Flight Behavior is probably one of Kingsolver's most insightful offerings. The conflict between faith and science is made real and tangible in Dellarobia's personal struggle with the choices she's made in life, and how they have stunted her potential. She was a complex and well drawn character, and I felt her.

What is this book about?

"The flames now appeared to lift from individual treetops in showers of orange sparks, exploding the way a pine log does in a campfire when it is poked. The sparks spiralled upward in swirls like funnel clouds. Twisters of brightness against grey sky."

On the Appalachian Mountains above her home, a young mother discovers a beautiful and terrible marvel of nature: the monarch butterflies have not migrated south for the winter this year. Is this a miraculous message from God, or a spectacular sign of climate change. Entomology expert, Ovid Byron, certainly believes it is the latter. He ropes in…

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Winter Fire

By Laurie Dubay ,

What is my book about?

I should have seen Bren for what he was right away…

I’d spent most of my time at Yew Dales watching the slopes, and I’d never seen a snowboarder command the mountain the way Bren did. Everything seemed to bend to his will…the snow, the trees, even the sky. He was lit from within, flashed over everyone he passed like a wildfire, left a trail of awed, panting thirst in his wake.

I was no exception.

Until I was.

And that’s when Loki came to burn it all down.

He knows Bren’s secret, and has made it his mission to discover every one of mine. As he patiently gathers all the ammo he needs to drag Bren back to the world he escaped, the only questions left are, how will we stop him, and how much of my world will be destroyed in the process? Bren warned me to stay away from Loki, to never let him catch me alone, but as my desperation grows, so does the strength of Loki's pull, turning Bren’s protective grip on me into a stranglehold.

And maybe that’s Loki’s plan.
