Fiercely independent Maisie Dobbs has recently set herself up as a private detective. Such a move may not seem especially startling. But this is 1929, and Maisie is exceptional in many ways.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Crossing Places

❤️ loved this book because...

I loved the exploration that is the backdrop to this series of books. The main character is a forensic archeologist, unusual in itself, but gets complicated, as are the crimes unearthed in the book, by the affair she has with the main detective on the scene, who is married. Juicy stuff all around in what seems to me to be one of the most beautiful places in the world—Oceanside in England!

Tim Miller, himself a Republican operative, explains with clarity and humor why Republicans signed up to follow Donal Trump. Spoiler alert: it’s all about the money and power. Miller has left the Republican Party.

What is this book about?

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Former Republican political operative Tim Miller answers the question no one else has fully grappled with: Why did normal people go along with the worst of Trumpism?

As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC "autopsy," Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment,…
