Jess L. M. Anderson ❀️ loved this book because...

This book had me wanting to smack these idiots. During my read through I repeatedly begged with them to kiss, stop being oblivious, and that they needed to stop being so dramatic. 5 stars. A great breath of fresh air and break from the heavier novels on my TBR this year.

What is this book about?

Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this funny, subversive young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it...and to stay alive.

Arek hadn't thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he's finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don't come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Fourth Wing

Jess L. M. Anderson πŸ‘ liked this book because...

I'm going to start this off by saying I don't think this is necessarily a bad read, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I struggled to get into this book, but I was committed to finishing it since so many friends had read the book and loved it. By the 5-hour mark of the audiobook, I was debating DNFing but decided to just power on. I don't think I started getting invested in this read until about the halfway mark. This book is full of a lot of popular romance tropes like enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn, and more. Overall, just felt predictable and a bit slow for my taste. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 instead of a 3 is because the dramatized audiobook version had me laughing so hard I was crying at times. The sound effects and tonal shifts in the music and VAs during certain parts were what kept me going. The dramatic narration and music suddenly going to sultry narration with romantic piano music had me giggling at my desk and having to pause so I could keep going. Yarros does a great job of describing everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, that came across in the audiobook and added to the amusement at times. Mostly when describing the love interests. Overall 3/5 on the story and 5/5 on the audiobook because these VAs went ALL IN.
