My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of A Thousand Splendid Suns

❤️ loved this book because...

I was inspired how Hosseini managed to take such difficult subjects as the Afghan war, the lived experience of women during this time, domestic violence, Shariah punishment, resilience, and yet keep me reading with optimism and deep connection to his characters. Real beauty emerged from a situation that I have only experienced from a western perspective. I found myself deep inside the characters and places I have never visited. An eye-opener and a heart opener., laced with beauty.

Book cover of The Binding

❤️ loved this book because...

Collins blends the boundaries between my love of writing, reading, and psychology. With mind blowing originality, she creates society where writing your story is an ominous form of social control and psychological dissociation. Only the bravest characters hold on to the human existential values and stand up for forbidden love. I was in awe of this book that leads me to experience the world of literacy in a totally new way, As a social tool which can be manipulated for good or ill.

Book cover of Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses

❤️ loved this book because...

Who would’ve thought that a book about mosses could draw me in so deeply! The author, who reads her own work, is not only a professor of botany but manages to gift her indigenous education and instincts through her writing and her immersion in the forests, seashore, and streets that she scientifically explores. The light humour she brings to her writing is infectious, and I learned to look at the world around me on a minute scale as she drew existential analogies to our ways of being in the world, supported by indigenous wisdom and university anecdotes. A quiet thought-provoking listen.

What is this book about?

Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites readers to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.

In this series of linked personal essays, Robin Kimmerer leads general readers and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings.
