Book cover of Roar

Cally Oldershaw ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved this book as I recognised so many of the women that Cecilia Ahern describes. I see a glimpse of the characters in my friends, my family, my colleagues and others, and some of the characteristics in myself too. I laughed, I cried and I went to sleep dreaming of the stories of these amazing women, which are told with such humour, insight and originality. I just wish I had found it and read it sooner.
Each of the 30 stories conjures up a scenario so familiar but described with such incredible insight that they will stay with you. I particularly enjoyed ‘The Woman Who Slowly Disappeared’, ‘The Woman Who Was Kept on the Shelf’ and ‘The Woman Who Ate Photographs’, but I loved them all.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of A History of Loneliness

Cally Oldershaw ❤️ loved this book because...

The honesty of the book surprised me. The author, an Irishman, didn’t hold back in detailing the terrible part the Catholic Church played in Ireland, when many children were the victims of abuse by priests. Most young men who joined the priesthood had a vocation, but others merely followed family tradition or were victims of family pressures. So, where does the blame lie?

The victims and the accused are fundamental to the book, but as important are the witnesses who did nothing to protect the children. I was drawn into the dilemma of the main character. It left me wondering what if I had been a witness – would I have recognized what I was witnessing and if so, what would I have one with that knowing?

He goes in full of ambition and hope, dedicated to his studies and keen to make friends. Forty years later, Odran's devotion has been challenged by the revelations that have shattered the Irish people's faith in the church. He has seen friends stand trial, colleagues jailed, the lives of young parishioners destroyed and has become nervous of venturing out in public for fear of disapproving stares and insulting remarks. Book cover of Emma in the Night

Cally Oldershaw ❤️ loved this book because...

This is one of those books that left me wondering - what would I have done? It also made me question the way I judge people and how much of that judgement is due to the expectations of society and how much due to my own experiences. What does it mean to be good?
The story is about two sisters who disappeared. Then three years later one of the sisters returns. She tells her story slowly and carefully, pulling the reader along from page to page from chapter to chapter. She kept me enthralled to the end. An end which was well worth waiting for.

'A brilliant read' B A Paris

Two sisters go missing
Only one returns.

Getting people to believe you is easy.

If you tell them what they want to hear.

When my sister and I disappeared three years ago,
they found Emma's car at the beach. Some people believed she had gone there to find a party or meet a friend who
never showed. They believed that she'd gone for a swim.
They believed that she'd drowned. Maybe by accident. Maybe a suicide.

Everyone believed Emma was dead.

As for me, well - now I'm back to tell our story.

You'll…
