Two things I absolutely loved growing up: fantasy novels and history. Swashbuckling pirate stories are like a fantastic combination of both, and the way that the age of sail touched all corners of the world creates an opportunity for so many different kinds of stories to be told through this lens. As a queer writer, my passion is writing the kind of stories I loved as a child. As a trans adult, I find joy in making the next generations feel comfortable in their own skin. Living in Vancouver, B.C. I write novels and animated television, and I also co-host a podcast about advertising called Ad Creeps.
I’m a huge fan of queer re-tellings (as you can probably sense from this list) as well as lush, detailed historical fiction, and C.B. Lee delivers both in this vivid, adrenaline-spiking adventure. My favorite thing about this story is how Lee takes the bones of Treasure Island and reanimates them, bringing a new perspective to a classic by shifting the focus from traditional Western pirate narratives. Riding the waves with Xiang as she discovers her own identity and family history is an absolute delight, and seeing her relationship with Anh grow is a beautiful thrill.

This fun-filled piece of pulp sci-fi is a perfect example of the recursive sci-fi genre.
Mike de Wolf, the friend of a popular author, is present as the author’s publisher pressures him to finish a novel he has received the advance money for. The author mentions Mike would be a perfect example of the villain, the Admiral of a Spanish fleet sent to rid the Caribbean of English pirates.
Mike leaves the room and accidentally electrocutes himself in the bathroom, only to find himself still living as the villain of the swashbuckling romance. What follows could be unbelievable, but is so full of realistic period action and the logical reactions and comments of Mike to the typewriter he hears in the sky, that it works quite well.

When I was in high school, someone handed me a copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I haven’t been the same since. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It was packed to the gills with action, adventure, wild ideas, and, above all, humor. Every sentence made me giggle. Every observation made my jaw drop. Plus, loving this book made me feel like I belonged to a weird little club. When I started to write The Dragon Squisher, my first thought was to do “a Douglas Adams thing” but for fantasy. Then I thought: Maybe I should see if someone’s done this already.
A steam-punk alternative history novel featuring flying cities, exploding priests, confectionary gangsters, piratical florists, and so, so much more. The sheer depth of imagination, ridiculously meticulous world-building, and bombastic humor would make me insanely jealous of Penney’s and Johnson’s talent if I—wait, no, I am insanely jealous of their talent. I can’t wait for the sequel.
This is a great read but also a fantastic audiobook. Brendan McDonald juggles dozens of characters with aplomb.

This was my first experience with Jonathan Auxier and it made me into an instant and always fan of his books. Its fairytale-like feel and enthralling story of Peter Nimble, a blind orphan and master thief, was so wonderful to read, I experienced some serious book withdrawal when I reached the end. (Luckily, we get to spend more time in Peter’s world in Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard!) This book’s story and characters are so beautifully crafted, you’ll probably want to read this one more than once—like I did!

I’m a criminal defense attorney, mom, and wife who grew up along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and lived there for 35 years, staring out at the vast water of the “Inland Seas” aka The Great Lakes. Intrigued by pirates, the criminals of the water, and the stories of pirates roaming the lakes, when I began writing fiction, I absolutely had to write a modern pirate series set in the area where I grew up.
