This was an engaging thriller, set in the Middle East. The plot is fiction, but based on reality and the scenarios in the book could certainly end up happening. Some of what was written in this book did end up happening AFTER it was written. I like that the author has a deep knowledge of bible prophecy and that is what inspires his writing.

I loved this book because, as always, I’ve come to expect amazing writing from Gregg Hurwitz. He mixes action prose with beautifully drawn scenes in a rare combination of accuracy and emotion.

This is the eighth book in the Orphan X series, and it still delivers great intrigue, heartfelt moments, life questions, and the quirky but deadly protagonist Evan Smoak. I like how Evan evolves from an elite assassin and the choices he has to make in a hard double life. Side characters like Candy are fun to root for.

Joey, Evan’s “adopted” daughter, makes the perfect companion for Evan, and the real family moments they share make the book have such heart that it’s very relatable.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a former Green Beret and combat veteran of OIF (Iraq), OEF (Afghanistan), and OEF-TS (North Africa). These experiences have given me insights into things that most people never get to see or even hear about, as well as first-hand knowledge of the men who make up the Special Operations community and what drives them. After leaving Special Forces I have written three published Special Operations-focused books, both fiction and non-fiction, which has led to a life of studying everything there is to know about Special Operations, the intelligence behind wars, and the history of both.

Robert's book list on special operations soldiers fighting evil enemies

Robert Patrick Lewis Why Robert loves this book

In the fight against the War on Terror, many Americans have long forgotten the war that never stopped raging against an enemy that is better funded than many of our governmental organizations, is not bound by any laws or treaties, has a virtually unlimited supply of money, weapons, and soldiers, and is located just south of our borders.

Patriot Games is an oldie but goody, a fictional novel that sheds light on the realistic way in which our War on Drugs encompasses Special Operations troops working hand in hand with intelligence agencies and law enforcement. I have friends who have fought directly in these drug wars, and who have told me the enemy had all of their names and personal information before they even landed south of the border for their deployments. The War on Drugs is savage and is still raging very close to home, yet we rarely hear…

H.R. Kemp Why H.R. loves this book

This book is a slow-burn thriller, and I found it both compelling and disturbing.

I love books that draw on contemporary issues and raise complex and thought-provoking issues. Word of Honor uses the Vietnam War to tackle difficult topics, and with the tagline, The Moral Maze of a Man at War, it’s the kind of book I revel in, one that took me through a multitude of emotions and challenged me to question more.

I’m a sucker for complex stories, novels that tackle politics, personal relationships, and very human dilemmas. This novel had it all.  I became invested in the outcome; I both cheered for and dreaded the consequences for the main character. That uncertainty was compelling and provocative.

This slow-burn, page-turner isn’t an action story, but gripped me and made me think. I like that.

This book plunged me into the world of special operations! Since the author has major military and law enforcement experience, in addition to a highly respectable list of books he’s penned, he was able to craft an action thriller with believable characters and realistic battle scenes. The stakes were high, and I really cared about what was going to happen to the hero.

This is a continuation of Cornwell's incredible saga of Uhtred of Bebbanburg and the birth of England more than a millennia ago.

If you've never read a Cornwell book, be prepared for a gritty, bloody, and historically accurate description of life and death in that savage era. The Uhtred of this novel has grown older and wiser over the years but finds himself entangled in the intrigues and battles of the royal families.

From my list on international espionage intertwined with faith.

Why am I passionate about this?

I was eleven years old when I read my first adult spy novel. I was only able to get my hands on it after receiving permission from my father, who brought home three to four espionage books from the library every week. By the time I was halfway through the book, I was hooked on the genre forever. Since faith plays an important role in my life, I’m always delighted to discover authors whose books reflect a strong belief system yet who can tell a compelling, action-packed adventure without sounding preachy.

Luana's book list on international espionage intertwined with faith

Luana Ehrlich Why Luana loves this book

I love thrillers that tell the story of a group of operatives who must work together under the leadership of a strong central figure in order to accomplish a difficult mission, and from the opening chapter, I knew this novel would be exactly that.

This is the first book in the Warrior Spy Thriller Series. While I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the hero of the story, Delta Force operator, Reagan Rainey, who is temporarily assigned to a CIA entity, I was also fascinated by the other members of his special ops team, not only because of their unique personalities, but also by the way Rainey was able to share his faith with them without sounding preachy and to remind me of how grateful I am to live in America.

Book cover of Clarissa Oakes

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been fascinated by "sea stories" since I could read, maybe before. I was born in Liverpool, my dad was in the navy, my family ran an 18th-century inn named the Turk’s Head after a nautical knot, and I’ve directed or written more than twenty films, plays, and novels with the sea as their setting. But they’re not really about the sea. For me, the sea is a mirror to reflect the human condition, a theatre for all the human dramas I can imagine. More importantly, I’ve read over a hundred sea stories for research and pleasure, and those I’ve chosen for you are the five I liked best.

Seth's book list on books about the sea that aren’t just about sailing on it, or fighting on it, or drowning in it, but are really about the human condition

Seth Hunter Why Seth loves this book

I loved this book because it isn’t just a great story; it demonstrates that the nautical genre, which is supposedly about rugged masculinity, heroism, male bonding, and man against the sea, can be about many other things too, even women!

There is nothing like a ship at sea for creating the ideal hothouse environment for a penetrating study of human nature, especially when you throw a woman into the mix. Clarissa Oakes is a stowaway on a 19th-century sailing ship, the only woman among 200 men, and the perfect catalyst for an explosion of male desire, jealousy, and rage.

It's probably the best book I’ve read in this genre for demonstrating just how much you can stretch the canvas to cover almost every aspect of the human condition.
