Why am I passionate about this?

Raised in an atheist family, I came to faith in Christ in middle age and am now devoted to spreading the Gospel. I am a PhD biochemist and the author of the award-winning The Works of His Hands: A Scientist’s Journey from Atheism to Faith. I was a professor at three major universities and held leadership positions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. I have published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, as well as articles on science and faith. I serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly magazine God and Nature. My passion is to proclaim the harmony between science and Christianity.

Sy Garte Why I love this book

Stephen Meyer, author of Signature in the Cell, presents the historical reality of the relationship between science and faith as complementary, and not in conflict, as the modern mythology of atheism holds.

He then makes a detailed, comprehensive, yet accessible case for the reality of a divine mind behind the creation of the universe and of life.

The three areas Meyer focuses on are the Big Bang beginning of all matter and energy, the extremely well-tuned values of the cosmological and other physical constants (without which life would be impossible), and the unique complexity of the genetic code as the information system in all of life.

The arguments are compelling, and this book is a great example of how science refutes the claim that there is no scientific evidence for God, a claim that is still being made by atheists. This book leaves no doubt that the God hypothesis is alive and well supported by the scientific evidence.

What is this book about?

The New York Times bestselling author of Darwin's Doubt, Stephen Meyer, presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology.

Beginning in the late 19th century, many intellectuals began to insist that scientific knowledge conflicts with traditional theistic belief—that science and belief in God are “at war.” Philosopher of science Stephen Meyer challenges this view by examining three scientific discoveries with decidedly theistic implications. Building on the case for the intelligent design of life that he developed in Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in cosmology and physics…

Book cover of Believing Is Seeing

Sy Garte Why I love this book

Michael Guillen, a well-known science reporter and broadcast journalist, has published an exciting and easily understood book about how science, especially physics, supports the idea of a divine creator of the universe.

Guillen, a former atheist and skeptic of Christianity, found his worldview turned around by his scientific studies.

This book is beautifully written and absolutely accessible to everyone, including those with no training in physics or other sciences.

The author describes his own journey to faith through his science and answers all the questions a reader might have about the truth of the evidence. His faith shines through all the pages of this book and it is a must read for anyone interested in the harmony of science and Christian faith.

What is this book about?

Is your worldview enlightened enough to accommodate both science and God at the same time?

Dr. Michael Guillen, a best-selling author, Emmy award–winning journalist and former physics instructor at Harvard, used to be an Atheist―until science changed his mind. Once of the opinion that people of faith are weak, small-minded folks who just don't understand science, Dr. Guillen ultimately concluded that not only does science itself depend on faith, but faith is actually the mightiest power in the universe.

In Believing Is Seeing, Dr. Guillen recounts the fascinating story of his journey from Atheism to Christianity, pulling back the curtain…

Book cover of Science and the Mind of the Maker

Sy Garte Why I love this book

Today's popular narrative, based on advancements in science, is that it all happened by natural, random processes.

Melissa Cain Travis points to powerful evidence that the opposite is true—that cosmology, astronomy, biochemistry, and other disciplines strongly support what she calls "The Maker Thesis," which explains the origin, rationality, and intricacy of nature and the human mind's capacity to comprehend it.

Our universe is made up of numerous complex systems of order that both interact and coexist with each other as if in a carefully choreographed dance. Follow along on a fascinating journey about how the structure of nature and the mind of man resonate in ways that point to a Maker who fully intended the astounding discoveries being made in the natural sciences today.

Are We an Accident...or Not?

The question of cosmic origins and our place in the grand scheme of things has been debated for millennia. Why do we exist? Why does anything exist at all?

Book cover of The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God

Sy Garte Why I love this book

This is a powerful and important book, which appears at a critical time as our culture grapples with post-pandemic uncertainties in politics, moral values, and the purpose of life.

It is a blessing that Brierley’s signature style of speaking, with calm and perceptive simplicity, carries over to his writing. I found myself unable to put the book downthe writing was so good and the information being conveyed so interesting and hopeful.

For almost two decades, Justine Brierley hosted “Unbelievable,” one of the most popular and engaging podcasts on contemporary issues related to Christian belief and skepticism. This book is the fruit of those experiences with some of the sharpest minds of our time. The author concludes that we are in the middle of a basic shift regarding the truth of Christianity in Western culture.

Brierley portrays many examples of this shift among scientists, philosophers, historians, psychologists, writers, and artists.

I believe this book to be both prophetic and inspiring to Christian readers and should also be informative and enlightening for those reconsidering their agnostic or atheistic worldviews. It will certainly take its place as a landmark in the history of contemporary intellectual culture.

Could We Be Witnessing a Return of Belief in Our Generation?

Justin Brierley is convinced that in our time we are witnessing a growing wave of faith.

Famously described as the “long, withdrawing roar” of the “Sea of Faith,” the Christian narrative that shaped the West has been replaced by sweeping secularism. But is that the end of the story?

It was a conversation with agnostic journalist Douglas Murray that led Brierley to investigate whether a change was on the horizon. Speaking of the “Sea of Faith,” Murray remarked that tides come back in again and that a number of…

Book cover of The Sacred Chain

Sy Garte Why I love this book

This book by James Stump is a landmark work that contains the best amalgam of philosophy, science, and theology that I have come across.

I was strongly moved by the many discussions of the role of change (exemplified by biological evolution) in our world. Stump discusses how science itself, as much as the subjects of scientific enquiry, changes and ties this in with the theological implications of biblical/scientific interactions.

The book covers a great deal of ground as the chain of the title weaves into the problem of evil, the origins of humanity, the definition of the soul, and a lot more. It is all beautifully written and highly accessible, as well as accurate and thorough throughout.

Many readers will know the author from the high-quality podcast, “The Language of God.” Reading this book, one can almost hear Stump’s melodious voice as he discusses the science of God’s creation with his typical humility and perception.

For anyone interested in the intersection of the best science with a strong Christian faith, this book is a must-read.

Book cover of Beyond Evolution

What is my book about?

Sharing the same mistaken belief that science contradicts the Bible, many scientists and Christians have concluded that the worlds of science (represented by evolution) and religion are at odds. But this book claims that evolution is not an issue worth arguing about and is not the central force in biology.

Revolutionary new developments in biology are providing stronger evidence than ever before of a purposeful creator God. The latest research on agency, purpose, and cognition in all of life is presented with a biblical worldview as I explain why biology is at the threshold of a major transition and why new theories beyond evolution are needed to make further progress.
