Why am I passionate about this?

I am, by training, a philosopher, scientist, and clergyman who has spent 47 years speaking on issues pertaining to God, philosophy, science, and culture at many universities. Since childhood I’ve been fascinated both by nature, as well as by why people do the things they do. As for life experience, I’ve worked in several countries, have been married for more than 44 years, and raised 6 children … all of which have been an enormously valuable arena of learning. All of this has given me a deep conviction that I need to spend my life helping people to think about the things that are most important in life.

My project is...

Thoughts About God, Truth, and Beauty

Do we have free will? What caused nature? What is the meaning of life? Life’s greatest questions live in the borderlands between science, philosophy, and theology. This project is the outcome of a lifetime of research, writing, and speaking in all three areas … a growing series of intriguing articles to read, enjoy, and ponder.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Mere Christianity

Kirk Durston Why I love this book

I have found this book to be outstanding on almost all of life’s major philosophical questions, to the extent that I have not only read it at least a half dozen times but also taught it as a course, working through the book one chapter at a time.

It deals with arguably all the most important questions in life, including love, the problem of injustice and suffering, the existence of God, and human nature. I especially love C.S. Lewis’s ability to address deep subjects in everyday language in such an enjoyable and engaging way.

By C. S. Lewis ,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

Special 65th Anniversary Edition

One of the most popular and beloved introductions to the concept of faith ever written, 'Mere Christianity' has sold millions of copies worldwide.

The book brings together C.S. Lewis's legendary radio broadcasts during the war years, in which he set out simply to 'explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times'.

Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, Mere Christianity provides an unequalled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to absorb a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith.

Book cover of The Baron's Apprenticeship

Kirk Durston Why I love this book

This is by no means an ordinary novel written in the 19th century. I found something about this book that engages the deep questions of real life in many different ways. I enjoyed it so much that I have read it twice and very much look forward to reading it again very soon (which, of the one or two thousand books I’ve read, is a rare occurrence).

I actually felt that I was experiencing 19th-century life, which is not surprising given that the author lived and wrote at that time in history. The most wonderful effect of enjoying this book is that I found the story to be enormously spiritually uplifting—I’m a better person for having read it.

What is this book about?

Another book in the bestselling George MacDonald classic reprint series retold for today's reader by Michael R. Phillips.

A companion volume to The Lady's Confession and The Curate's Awakening (though each story is complete in itself), this is the story of Richard, the "apprentice" of the title. While an infant, he had been rescued from someone who viewed him as a threat, and his childhood and eventual apprenticeship as a bookbinder were marked by steady growth, both as a man of integrity and a skilled artisan. As a young man, Richard unknowingly returns to the estate of his birth, hired…

Book cover of The Great Divorce

Kirk Durston Why I love this book

I found this book to be a powerful allegory that made me think deeply about the purpose of life and how it can be either wasted or used to result in indescribable benefits for all eternity.

I have read it a couple of times, listened to it on audiobook, and look forward to reading it again—an indication that there is a lot in this book to think about.

By C. S. Lewis ,

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked The Great Divorce as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce is a classic Christian allegorical tale about a bus ride from hell to heaven. An extraordinary meditation upon good and evil, grace and judgment, Lewis’s revolutionary idea in the The Great Divorce is that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. Using his extraordinary descriptive powers, Lewis’ The Great Divorce will change the way we think about good and evil.

Book cover of Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony

Kirk Durston Why I love this book

This book was suggested to me by a professor of New Testament studies at Cambridge University as his most highly recommended book for the historicity and preservation of the New Testament Gospels. I would heartily agree.

It is rigorously pedantic and thorough—which is exactly what I require on a topic like this. It is work to read this book, but very satisfying. It may be one of the most heavily underlined books I own, and I see it as a valuable resource that sits in a bookshelf beside my desk, where it can be immediately consulted.

By Richard Bauckham ,

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked Jesus and the Eyewitnesses as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A groundbreaking work in New Testament studies expanded and updated

Winner of the 2007 Christianity Today Book Award in Biblical Studies, this momentous volume argues that the four Gospels are closely based on the eyewitness testimony of those who personally knew Jesus. Noted New Testament scholar Richard Bauckham challenges the prevailing assumption that the Jesus accounts circulated as "anonymous community traditions," asserting instead that they were transmitted in the names of the original eyewitnesses.

In this expanded second edition Bauckham is adding a new preface, three substantial new chapters that respond to critics and clarify key points of his argument,…

Book cover of The Screwtape Letters

Kirk Durston Why I love this book

I have found this book to be a phenomenal exposé on the topic of temptation, presented as a conversation between a senior demon and its junior.

Having many decades of life experience, I have found this book to do such an outstanding job of portraying, through a fictional series of letters, exactly how we can be tempted to do, or not do, or say, or not say, or have attitudes which are destructive vs. beneficial. I walked through this book, chapter by chapter, with my six children when they were in their teens.

By C. S. Lewis ,

Why should I read it?

9 authors picked The Screwtape Letters as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

On its first appearance, The Screwtape Letters was immediately recognized as a milestone in the history of popular theology. Now, in it's 70th Anniversary Year, and having sold over half a million copies, it is an iconic classic on spiritual warfare and the power of the devil.

This profound and striking narrative takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a devil high in the Infernal Civil Service, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior colleague engaged in his first mission on earth trying to secure the damnation of a young man who has just become a Christian. Although…
